Some customer reviews of Zoom H4n Handy Recorder

Most helpful reviews

Robin, Tywyn

Score 10.0/10
Good points:
Excellent sound - great features. Easy to use in basic modes, very intuitive. Advanced modes are simple to find and adjust. Lots of thought gone into this product.

Really excellent sound from the built in mic's. Zoom use some cleaver pre-amp modelling. I use it for acoustic music recording for a bluegrass band and old time players (fiddle, banjo , guitar , dulcimer, voice). It is a great compact portable studio. I bet Alan Lomax wished he had one of these back in the 1940s for his field recordings!!!
Bad points:
Eats batteries if you need to use phantom power - but that's pretty obvious really as you can't get that sort of power for nothing!!!!

Good points:
Very easy to use
Heaps of functions
Easy navigation and selection of files and folders
Great recording quality
Gives multiple record options - including direct line in from my keyboard
Bad points:
Metronome doesn't work unless you are recording or playing back - so you can't use it just jamming
Tuner not straight forward to use either.

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Beautiful compact machine with very sensitive recording ability, my requirements
involve high quality solo and choir inputs, as well as piano(keyboard)
guitar & double bass .This recorder will handle this superlatively, once
I learn how to 'drive' it
Bad points:
poor (although comprehensive) 156 page instruction manual. I found
it hard to obtain the application info. I needed, although the operating
features of the recorder were exhaustively detailed

Good points:
Good set of options, including many different sampling depths and rates (WAV from 44.1KHz/16bit to 96KHz/24bit; MP3 from 48kbps to 320kbps and VBR)
Record to 4 tracks (it is possible to make surround sound with it)
Can use external microphones including with phantom power
Comes with Cubase LE 5 software
Good price
Bad points:
The internal microphones could be better protected
I would prefer it to be lighter and smaller (to help using it attached to a DSLR photo camera)

Also known as: Zoom H4N Digital Recorder, Zoom H4n Portable Handy Recorder

Manufacturer's Description

The Zoom H4n Handy Recorder picks up where the H4 left off and adds additional features to an already popular audio recorder. Ideal for recording interviews, lectures, rehearsals, meetings, and more, this palm-sized unit packs the ability to record up to 4 channels of audio at greater than CD quality.

The H4n features onboard true X/Y stereo microphones to pick up clear, natural sound without phase shifting. The mics can be rotated to select a 90° or 120° recording pattern for terrific versatility. The digitally-controlled preamp, combined with the high-quality microphones, allows you to capture Linear PCM audio at rates up to 24-bit/96kHz. The recorder captures audio to SD or SDHC cards with capacities up to 32GB. A USB 2.0 port allows you to quickly transfer files to a Mac or PC, or use the H4n as a live audio interface.

For connecting your own microphones or instruments, the H4n features XLR/TRS combo input jacks with phantom capability. A 3.5mm line output is provided, and a reference speaker is built-in for quickly reviewing your recordings. The unit operates on a pair of standard AA batteries, and features a Stamina mode to provide up to 11 hours of continuous recording at 16-bit/44.1kHz. Other useful features of the H4n include variable playback speed, automatic and pre-record functions, a low-cut filter and limiter for improving the sound quality of recordings, time stamping, a metronome and tuner, and more. The backlit LCD screen and intuitive controls are easy to use, even for the recording novice. A collection of accessories are included so you can start recording right out of the box.
