Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Iam both a business and home user and as such have found that the Qosmio 500 is suited to both these needs.
Bad points:
I would say the weight. I love the size so I suppose the weight is a compromise I can well put up with.

Score 7.0/10
Good points:
The most outstanding feature of this machine is the huge display that is very clear and very effective. I purchased the machine for two purposes 1) digital photography and 2) CAD calculations that are compute intensive. The display is all I could hope for (given that its obviously not an Eizo) as far as photographic work is concerned. For compute intensive work it is also excellent with the Intel i7 presumably being the key factor there. The keyboard is very good - I'm a touch typist (yes, I've been using computers since the early 1970's ....). The various peripherals seem to operate fine, no problem connecting to the home wireless network. The built-in webcam is good although some caveats there. Speakers and audio excellent.
Bad points:
First, yes the black finish looks great, but it really shows any fingerprints. I'm not happy with the touch pad, i've used such a pad before (same manufacturer of touch pad and laptop) and had no problems. So I've bought a wireless mouse that is much more to my liking (works fine with the built-in bluetooth).

The really big negative of this machine is the appalling start up time, and indeed anything that involves disc access. I'm running it with standard software as supplied by the manufacturer, and anti-virus software. I did have Adobe running at start up too, but have removed that in an attempt to improve start up times. Even so, after logging in (and log in screen appears in a respectably short period of time), it takes about four minutes to be able to start using the machine. During that time the disc activity light is permanently on. Even when using the machine it will pause for disc activity. I run photoshop in 64-bit mode (CS4) and whenever I save a jpeg, the jpeg save screen freezes for a few seconds. Very annoying when processing a large number of images. I note that unlike the US versions of this machine, UK purchasers get a 5400 rpm drive, not a 7200 rpm drive.

The caveats with the web-cam are that it needs user intervention to switch between bright and dark scenes, surely this can be done automatically?

Good points:
Sleek modern and responsive. Excellent keyboard and graphics - does what it says on the tin! Superb design.
Bad points:
It is very heavy for portability. Not many individuals would buy a laptop soley for gaming, but would expect to use it for school, uni work etc as well.
