mark, Slough Ken Burns my benchmark

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Easy to use from the box. Many additional features for the enthusiastic and the technophile. Ideal for Freeview recording either with the onboard digital tuner or via 'line in' from set top box.
Familiarisation rewarded by many user selected options for increased flexibility.
Bad points:
Limited editing functionality-cannot join or move parts of recording.
Analogue tuner unnecessary- could remove and enable simultaneous recording of 2 digital broadcasts when required?
May also improve quality of digital tuner.
Manual works well for the enthusiast investing in a steady familiaristaion process with the RDR HXD995. My copy is well thumbed and annotated. A simple user manual for the basic functions may be a good idea for some casual users.
Manual index needs to be improved. I resorted to an ecopy and electronic search many times.

Score 1.0/10
Good points:
Very easy to set up and use. Very good on pause and resume, EPG and recordings library. It worked very well for 2.5 years (until the warranty expired) then it failed completely.
Bad points:
Trying to get it repaired is a nightmare. The support centre says it needs two new parts one of which is unavailable - although the same model DVD Recorder is still advertised for sale.

Score 5.0/10
Good points:
Rather complex to install.
Bad points:
I've had four similar SONY HDR-recorders and two of them have broken in a similar way, i.e. when I try to burn a DVD it hangs and I have had to wait four weeks to have it repaired the last time. No good.

G, Salisbury Watch drama, comedy, films.

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Does what it is designed for. We hardly ever watch television live these days - all the series we want to watch are queued up on the hard drive for our convenience.
Can watch one recording while recording another programme.
Can start watching a programme a few minutes after it started recording - never need to miss the start of a programme.
Can program or delete other recordings while recording another programme.
Can easily copy recordings from the hard disc to a DVD and keep for longer term.
Bad points:
Only irritation is that programmed recordings set up in advance are deleted when the channels have to be re-tuned from time to time. Not surprising, because the advance programming would then be pointing at the wrong channel. I expect this is common of all recorders, but wonder if there will be a way round that problem in future?

Purchaser

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Does exactly what you want. 1080P up-scaling is great, better image on HDTV in SP than a live transmission.
Menu's easy to work out and the series link is a fantastic feature, even if Channel 5 can't differentiate between the main transmission and repeats!!
Image very stable, blank screen mid-recording is very very rare (but we do have a high-gain arial on a 12' mast as well)
Bad points:
Shame you can't record HD back down the HDMI cable from the new Barvia Freeview HD TV's.
Only 1 decoder so can't record 2 clashing programmes.
When dubbing to DVD in a different quality it records in 4:3 not 16:9 and does it real time so takes ages, rather than post-processing and then high-speed dubbing.

Good points:
Does most of what it says on the box
Bad points:
Only does most of what it says on the box.
I think it is appalling that Sony choose as a partner (GuidePlus) a company that ceases its service before analogue services are all switched to digital.
Personally, I will not trust Sony in future.
