James, Haverfordwest Detailed reviewer

Score 7.0/10
Good points:

• The mp3 player feels nice to hold.

• Its small shape and lightness make it good for things such as going to the gym or listening to music on the move.

• The built in usb is handy for the computer as you don't have to worry about a cable.

• Most of the buttons are accessible and easy to get used to.

• The hold switch is easy enough to put on but doesn't get knocked off easily.

• The headphone socket is positioned well.

• It has a fairly good range of functions.

• There is a button for extra bass which works very well and gives you a really cool sound.

• The sound quality is pretty good and the equaliser as well (you can store one equaliser of your own).

• The zappin feature is useful if you have a lot of songs or you are not sure what song to listen to.

• The screen is bright.

• The home menu is clear and gives you 3 choices - Voice, Music library, and Settings.

• The feature for recording from the microphone is fairly basic but does the job ok.

• The music library is pretty good and gives you a nice lot of choice of how to see your music.

• The settings menu gives you a reasonable amount of options including the language, equaliser, power save, and led on/off.

• If you set the led on, when you press the bass button it will flash in time with the music - quite entertaining.

• The battery life is really good (Sony say its 20 hours but I haven't tested this) and the charge time is REALLY quick (about an hour for a full charge).

Computer sync

• It is easy to use with your computer, you just plug it in and go.

• You can either sync your music using windows media player or just drag and drop your music files.

• Works well with the media go software free from SONY.

• It works well with windows 7.

• I bought this second hand so I don't know about the accessories as it didn't come with any.
Bad points:

• Although the mp3 player feels nice in the hand there is quite a lot of plasticyness if you scrutinise it closely.

• It is quite easy to lose the usb cap if you are not very careful.

• The wheel for scrolling between tracks is a bit fiddly, and harder to get used to than a normal control system.

• The screen is quite small really, and the lettering and information could be hard for some people to see.

• It depends on your view really if you think the mp3 player looks attractive or not, but the back of it doesn't look that great - There is a big label and a few ugly holes either side that I am not sure what are used for.

• There is no clip on it so you have to put it in your pocket which could at times be annoying.

• Some of the buttons double up for different functions and can be a bit irritating.

• The screen can get scratched easily if you are not careful.

• It can be a bit difficult to navigate the menus easily at times, as it is a little confusing (partly due to the small screen).

• There is no radio feature although there is on the more expensive model (NWZ B153F).

• The volume is not amazing really - if you are using cheaper headphones it can be borderline.

• It doesn't have an inbuilt speaker.

• When playing your music there are no actual seconds or minutes displayed showing you how long the song has left to play, but only a timeline stretching across the screen. This makes it very hard to know how long the song is and how many minutes of the song are remaining.

• It does not play protected songs so you need to check your music before buying.

• It doesn't display cover art pictures.

Computer sync

• It says in the instructions you can't use it with Macintosh.

• I couldn't find it in itunes.

• I once put some music on it from a computer and it got confused and wouldn't recognise the details about the mp3 files (artist, album, etc.) Also it displayed the numbers of the songs before the title of them and so messed up the ordering of them. I formatted the memory and put the music on again and it was fine.

• I bought this second hand so I don't know about the accessories as it didn't come with any.

Newcastle, Chris

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
Light, easy to operate while in pocket, generous memory I haven't even half filled and I've stored weeks worth of listening. The ability to record voice or radio is useful.
Bad points:
Mechanical jog wheel does not inspire confidence and feels that this will be the first part to break. Headphones supplied fall out of ears too easily. Some difficulties when creating and inserting contents into new folders - duplicating themselves and for some reason files placed into some folders can also appear in others.
