Score 8.0/10
Good points:
Live view magnification and focus peaking makes it easy to use cheap old manual lenses as well as the auto lenses (in manual focus) I had on my defunct Nikon D5000.
Flip-up screen for easy low-angle shots - flowers etc.
Compact - very useful, major plus point
Kit lens (16-50) is okay and also very compact.
Integrated battery charger means it can be charged from any usb socket (not checked with 500mA) - brilliant.

Bad points:
Some controls I use all the time are buried in menus and I have not found a way to program the dials and buttons to suit me, e.g. Shoot Mode should come up in one click, and sometimes both dials do the same job.
Wifi downloading seems slow, not obvious how to direct it straight to computer rather than through network router. I resort to removing the card - it was a card mechanism fault that killed my Nikon so I am nervous about this.
Touch screen needs more pressure than the hinge friction can take so you have to close it or hold it up. Sometimes it mis-selects and it is not comparable with recent smartphone touch-screens.
Spare Sony battery very expensive. Not sure whether charging cheaper replacement battery inside the camera is a good idea. No external charger was supplied.

Digital Cameras Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

The NEX-5R might be small, but it takes pictures like a DSLR and with the speed of a DSLR too. Image quality comes first and the NEX-5R has a large APS-C sensor delivering 16.1 megapixel shots and bright clear images in low light. What’s more, with built-in Wi-Fi you can connect to other devices like a smartphone or tablet, share your pictures on Facebook or use your smartphone as a remote control for your camera. You can even download image-enhancing apps that will give you even more ways to get the shot you want.

Size Matters
Great pictures are built with light, so when it comes to picture quality and sensor size, bigger really is better. The NEX-5R comes with a huge, DSLR-sized APS-C sensor. This captures more light than other interchangeable lens cameras and more of the image entering the lens reaches the sensor. The result — beautifully lit, pro-quality shots at up to 16.1 megapixels.

Think Fast, Shoot Faster
Be sure to catch blink-and-you-miss them moments with Hybrid Auto Focus technology to capture high-speed action. It locks into focus as fast as a DSLR and takes photos faster too, making it ideal for spontaneous shots, or for high-speed action. So when you’re in the velodrome and the bikes are zooming past, you can be sure your photos will be sharp and crisp.

Get More from Your Camera with Wi-Fi Connectivity
With Wi-Fi built-in to the NEX-5R you can instantly upload your photos to Facebook or PlayMemories Online straight from your camera. You have access to a world of apps which give you more ways to get creative with PlayMemories Camera. Find everything from apps for re-touching photos, to a remote control app that lets you use your smartphone to take shots at a distance.

PlayMemories Camera
With 4 apps as standard, and more being added all the time, PlayMemories Camera helps you unlock the potential of such a powerful camera.

For maximum creativity, Picture Effect+ lets you modify images by changing colours, adding textures or including special visual effects – all without a PC. Transform simple shots into works of art using modes such as Toy Camera or Partial Colour. You can even adjust the level of some effects or combine multiple effects for total creative control.

If you want to take group shots, the Smart Remote app removes the hassle of the self-timer – just connect to your smartphone and you can preview the image on your phone screen while using it as a remote to control the shutter. The photo then appears on the phone’s screen, so if your friends had their eyes closed you can take another shot right away without having to run back to the camera and set it up again.

Ever had a perfect picture ruined by a passer-by walking in to the edge of the shot, or an awkwardly placed signpost that you can’t miss? With the Photo Retouch app you can resize, reframe and tweak the levels, colour and brightness until you get your photos ‘just right’.
