Good points:
We were reletive newcomers to home computing but have managed to use the on board help manual to good effect to get all we require from the product so far. Every peripheral device we've used has been hassle free and with immediate success.
We only have dial up to the internet for occasional use at 1p a minute with Tesco (about £5 a month) and find the operating speed very usable with no desire to change to Broadband yet.
The keys and touchpad have a quality feel to them and the widescreen allows full spread internet pages to be displayed in full with no annoying horrizontal scrolling required.
Not the cheapest on the market for the spec, but quality, manageable computing from the first switch on.
Bad points:
It probably has the lowest end of Sony's range of Li-Ion battery for duration. We find it exceptable at about 2 1/2 hours but anyone with a serious travelling requirement for this model would need an expensive upgrade. The short duration battery must have been fitted to keep the purchase cost attractive. We tend to use the supplied mains power lead/charger most of the time.
There is an on board manual for the laptop that we have printed off at our expense for referance during operation, needing to flit between the on board pages and the page you're having trouble with was not pleasurable. Again, not printing and packaging the hard copy manual was probably to do with Sony's price control.
All peripheral sockets are open to dust and contamination which would need careful concideration if used in the field. The 90's Sony laptop we have replaced had quality caps fitted over them all.
The power lead plugs into the far left corner of the base and for some reason Sony have decided to make a plastic form around the plug so the flex has to always exit from the left side. It could have easily been made reversable for left or right exit wrt a mains wall socket. Where I sit, the flex exits the base and needs to turn 180 degrees to the right and care has to be taken to not stress the exit point.
There is a brighter area on the display in the top left corner which is a manufacturing defect (shows mostly with a single colour display like the blue login page at power up) but we decided it was exceptable for our use and didn't return the product. It hasn't caused a problem viewing anything so far.
