Alan, Ledbury

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
1 The sensitivity in low light is impressive
2 The microphone(ECM-XM1) - amplifier combination is good and very sensitive
3 Good quality optics, but would have liked a larger zoom range
5 The shutter on the lens hood is a useful feature and is more convenient than a lens cap
Bad points:
* The wind screen is not sufficiently effective and needs improvement
* The lack of a good printed manual is very regrettable for a camera of this price and versatility. The CD is a poor and inadequate substitute (It didn't mention that the solid state memory needed to be formatted before it could be used!)
* The reduction of the field of view when Active Stabilisation is employed is a disadvantage. It is too difficult to switch between normal and Active Stabilisation in the field, especially in bright daylight when the touch screen is hard to read. I would have
* The exposed socket on the main body for the microphone/amplifier connection is an exposed area letting in dirt and moisture. It also exposes the O-ring to sunlight risking early degradation.
* The XLR connectors for audio input are too large for such a small portable camera. They should be more compact and anyone wishing to use a separate XLR input plug should be able to use an adaptor
* There is over-dependence on the touch screen. It is hard to see and operate in bright light and soon becomes covered in finger marks, which exacerbate the problem. This makes any mode changes in the field difficult
On a more general point, one that applies to all video cameras, it would be useful for video photographers who shoot in short sequences of a few second to have the option of a "squeeze to shoot" and "release to stop", as with cine cameras. This would avoid the ambiguity of whether one is filming or not

John, Dumfries, Scotland

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
It is a great size for the sort of work I do; it is straightforward to use; the internal memory is a great addition (I used a Z7 before the NX70).
Bad points:
The mechanical zoom is poor. A few more features which can be accessed through buttons rather than the touch screen would be a help.
A second "record" button on the other side of the camera (or the rear) would be good.
