Score 8.0/10
Good points:
Intuitive; excellent image quality and shake stabilisation; good storage; excellent still image quality; viewfinder so useful in bright conditions; good connectivity (but not the PMB software- see below)
Bad points:
Poor software- PMB needs a complete overhaul and only worked without crashing after re-installing and several upgrades; no ability to download directly to a stand-alone hard disc in this model; no means of upgrading the software to allow this - this is an excellent product let down by poor software. Expensive accessories.

Good points:
Easy to use, big storage power,
Bad points:
GPS not consistance, first 2 months was fine and then the picture quality is not very sharp and clear (some kind of smoog effect). For the price offered other brand like Canon has more features and very sharp picture quality.

Score 7.0/10
Good points:
The ability to take 12meg pix stills ,and to have it's own flash. All the menus are intuitive and easy to follow. The High Definition movies are clear and crisp
Bad points:
In bright sunlight , the viewing screen is next to useless it's very difficult to see what you are looking at because of the glair . If you use the view finder on top then that seems to small an area to see.
I upgraded from a DCR-TRV33E which used mini DV tapes , my computer is an iMac using Snow Leopard , which I could download to a scratch disk , then i could edit using Final Cut Express but with the HDR-XR500VE internal hard drive you have to download straight on to your computers hard drive using iMovie first , and then put the movie to a scratch disk , then intrudes it to your preferred editing program , just seems long winded. Also I purchased an external mike to cut down on wind noise but that hasn't been a grate success even with a baffle .

Camcorders Buying Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Extra-long record time, superlative picture quality and smart features

Up to 50hr Full HD on 120GB HDD, 12x optical zoom, 12MP photo

  • Extra-long HD recording time
  • Very high quality low-light shooting
  • Less camera shake even when you’re walking
    Stunning Full HD, advanced features
Extra-long Full HD record time with 120GB hard disk drive, superlative picture quality and smart features. Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor for amazing low-light sensitivity, plus premium G Lens, Optical SteadyShot Active Mode and GPS inside.

No more camera shake
Wobbly pictures caused by unsteady hands are a common problem when you’re shooting without a tripod. Optical SteadyShot Active Mode Image stabilization cuts the effects of camera shake for clear, steady results, even if you’re walking along while shooting.

Natural looking faces every time
Faces can look dark and underexposed in bright, backlit situations like a sun-drenched beach. And if you’re shooting indoors there’s a risk your subject’s skin tone can look unnaturally coloured. The camcorder fine-tunes focus, exposure and skin tone for more natural looking faces.

More smiles every time
Wouldn’t it be great having a photographer by your side, capturing great still pictures of happy faces while you’re shooting video of a party or another special event? Smile Shutter automatically shoots still photos whenever your subject smiles, without interrupting video recording.

Know where you are… And were you’ve been
GPS tracks your position as you travel. See the exact location of your clips and still images with maps on the LCD screen. Then review your journey when you’re back home with online Google Maps on your PC

Anyone can make their own movies
Once you’ve shot a lot of footage with your camcorder, it takes time and effort to edit the results together and produce your own ‘mini movies’. The camcorder automatically picks and assembles clips together, adding professional-looking transition effects and a music soundtrack.
