Jef, Okehampton Experienced amateur

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
Photo's and movies, it takes very clear high definition pictures, even in poor lighting conditions. It uses very few mechanics so I am hoping for many years of use.
It is versatile, for direct viewing, for playing through (TVHD or 625 line), and loading to a computer for editing.
It is easy and comfortable to use and has a very good anti-shake system built in.
Bad points:
12X optical zoom is a little restrictive. I have had to purchase wide angle and zoom lenses to cover all shooting occasions and these extras are very expensive.
My main complaint is that it doesn't have an eyepiece type viewfinder which I prefer to use on most shoots. I find both types of viewfinder are preferable, to cover all situations.

Score 10.0/10
Good points:
Great low light performance
Accurate focus lock in mediocre light conditions
Rock steady image stabilization.
Bad points:
Lens no wider than 35mm
Have to use Pro Duo cards if you run out of internal space. Later models now support SD at last.
Fairly expensive.

Camcorders Buying Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Extraordinary Full HD images
Experience a new world of incredible imaging quality. Up to 13 hours Full HD recording on internal memory and optional Memory Stick™ – with no discs or tapes needed. Advanced Exmor R™ CMOS sensor and Sony G Lens capture amazing, detail-packed video and stills, even in low light.

Low light, no problem
Many camcorders struggle in low light, producing grainy, fuzzy images. Super sensitive Exmor R CMOS Sensor reduces image noise for clearer images. In conjunction with the powerful BIONZ processor you’ll get great results in low light, dim interiors or at dusk.

Better lens, better image
To achieve the best possible picture quality, a top-quality G Lens by Sony is combined with the sensitive Exmor R™ CMOS Sensor and powerful BIONZ processor. The result is detail-packed Full HD images that can be enjoyed on your HD TV.

No more camera shake
Wobbly pictures caused by unsteady hands are a common problem when you’re shooting without a tripod. Optical SteadyShot Active Mode Image stabilization cuts the effects of camera shake for clear, steady results, even if you’re walking along while shooting.

Know where you are… And were you’ve been
GPS tracks your position as you travel. See the exact location of your clips and still images with maps on the LCD screen. Then review your journey when you’re back home with online Google Maps on your PC

Natural looking faces every time
Faces can look dark and underexposed in bright, backlit situations like a sun-drenched beach. And if you’re shooting indoors there’s a risk your subject’s skin tone can look unnaturally coloured. The camcorder fine-tunes focus, exposure and skin tone for more natural looking faces.
