Good points:
Light weight. Compact and quick response from switching on. Whilst the technology is old compared to more recent systems with 'Internal Hard-drives' etc, the tape still gives (in my opinion), the best playback quality which is great for DVing/playback to your DVD recorder (suggest a high quality record mode on the DVD recorder) or PC for editing. Also, there is a 'Simple' mode which for the less technically minded user, hides a lot of the wizzy options (that you'll hardly ever use) and provides a very simple press and record system. Well worth investing in one of the new 10 hour batteries too for maximum comfort on long holidays.
Bad points:
Compared to my old replaced Sony HandiCam (Hi8) (which, whilst great technology in its day, is old and clunky looking now by comparison), the recording quality in low light levels of this digital model is not great. When panning, the camera tries to focus using the digital focus which makes the whole picture blurry until the camera is still again. Frustrating, but common (I believe) in all Digital camcorders as far as I'm aware - and actually really apparent compared to Hi8 analogue technology when you first view a digital recording. If a manufacturer can guarantee against their camera doing this, buy it!! Some day soon, I'm sure they all will (and internal hard-drives will continue to fall in price and improve recording quality) in which case, if you're replacing a perfectly good Hi8 just for the sake of it, my recommendation would be to wait! Having said this, for the money, it's not a lot to lose if you replace this model in 2 /3 years time.
