Good points:
Zeiss lens is superb; camera is loaded with features; especially good for a DSLR user because it allows you to do everything that a DSLR camera can do; RAW shooting brilliant; amazingly light and compact for such a competent camera; build quality is superb as you'd expect from Sony.
Bad points:
I was unlucky and had a faulty camera - it happens!

Battery life - I bought a spare (Sony original) battery but rarely need it. BEWARE - lots of forgeries on the market - only buy from reputable dealers and not via Amazon unless you really trust the vendor!
Bad points:
In-camera charging, no separate charger supplied. Sony version unavailable / very expensive - I bought a relatively low cost non-Sony charger which seems to do the job.
Body a bit smooth - could do with texture to help grip.
Limited zoom range - realise high quality lens won't lend itself to that and high pixel count / sensor size means relatively severe cropping maintains reasonable picture definition.
Sports Mode focus continually hunts which is irritating - I have read that Pet Mode is almost identical but allows different focus options to avoid hunting.
A bit expensive but it's a great camera!

Digital Cameras Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Serious imaging power and high-end optics make the sleek aluminium Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 I High Performance Compact Digital Camera ideal for those looking for dazzling image detail from a compact and pocket-friendly camera.

Bursting with detail

The high 20.2 megapixel resolution on the DSC-RX100MI packs each picture with crisp and accurate detail, allowing you to crop images with minimal loss in quality.

At the heart of the camera is a sensitive Exmor CMOS image sensor that captures more light from the scene, reproducing dramatic detail with improved fidelity and natural colour gradation. The high speed BIONZ imaging processor engine refines the picture and allows for continuous shooting at up to 10 fps – capture amazing stills from fast moving action.

A dual noise reduction system and column A/D conversion minimises image noise to ensure a smooth, clear and true-to-life reproduction, even in dim light conditions.

Carl Zeiss optics

The F1.8 Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens delivers unrivalled quality and a precise performance. The wide aperture range and 3.6x optical zoom opens new creative doors – capture subjects with gorgeously smooth background defocus.

A fast and accurate autofocus mechanism locks the subject in focus for a pin-sharp picture. You also have full control over focusing – select from AF or manual, just like a DSLR!

Movie moments

The Sony DSC-RX100M1 shoots movies in Full High Definition quality at the touch of a button. Great for those occasions when a still photo just isn’t enough, use this feature to record amazing video which you can watch back on an HDTV.

A SteadyShot optical image
stabilisation system corrects camera shake to deliver smooth, steady and blur-free footage, even when zooming or walking.

Intuitive control

The RX100 Mk1’s 3” WhiteMagic LCD screen offers bright and clear viewing for image framing and playback. The TruBlack technology raises the contrast to reduce reflections, allowing you to view in bright sunlight.

A smooth control ring gives you effortless control, enabling you to fine-tune images with control over exposure, zoom, picture effect and other functions.

Suitable for all scenes

An easy way to achieve great shots quickly, the Superior Auto Mode automatically adjusts the camera settings to produce a sharp, low-noise image with high dynamic range every time, saving you the work.

Experience perfect portraits with the Auto Portrait Framing and Face Detection functions. The features create professional compositions with well-exposed and in-focus faces.

Creative effects

There’s a choice of six Creative Styles to apply to your images – polish photos with a touch of creativity and enjoy fantastic results.

A Picture Effect mode adds artistic effects to images such as Toy Camera, HDR Painting and Watercolour.

You can now capture breathtaking landscapes in an even wider frame. The Sweep Panorama feature captures a number of images before stitching the results together, creating one epic image of your surroundings.

Shoot better photos with the pocket-sized Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 I High Performance Compact Digital Camera, bringing together the perfect combination of form and function.
