Score 8.0/10
Good points:
A lot of camera for the money and the size. Great zoom.
Bad points:
Flash is flimsy. Cost of flash for hot shoe connector is outrageous! Build in flash looks like an afterthought and a flimsy mechanical design.

Digital Cameras Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Compact, yet boasting an impressive 30x optical zoon, the Sony DSC-HX50B Advanced Compact Digital Camera is ideal for taking perfect shots with a pocket sized camera.

Professional photography

This 20.4 mp camera allows you to take fantastic photos and capture images you didn’t think possible thanks to the range of features packed within. All based around the DSC-HX50B’s powerful Exmor R™ CMOS sensor, you’ll be delighted with the superb quality of pictures you take again and again.

Quick capture

Sometimes you only have a second to capture the moment. Thanks to a fast autofocus feature, the DSCHX50B needs only 0.1 seconds to focus in daylight conditions. In addition, an optical steadyshot function means you don’t have to worry about keeping a steady hand or setting up a tripod – you’ll always have blur free and crisp pictures, even if zoomed in.

If the action is moving so fast you’re having trouble keeping up, a burst mode allows you to shoot at up to 10fps whilst still delivering detailed images.

Never worry about having the right settings for getting the shot that matters – simply point and press the button and delight in the results.

Up close and all around

Despite its small stature the DSC-HX50B has a 30x optical zoom, meaning you can capture sensational images, even from distance.

Panoramic photos are also easy to capture thanks to the Panorama mode. Simply press the shutter button and you’ll be able to take a sweeping picture of everything around you, allowing you to capture the scene and surroundings for those truly memorable moments.

Once you’ve taken your snaps, you can use the in-built WiFi to send photos and videos straight to a smartphone or tablet or even back-up shots wirelessly to your PC.

Perfect your pictures

Whilst the DSC-HX50B can do all the hard work for you, sometimes it’s nice to be in control. With manual control and exposure value dials on top of the camera you can select aperture or shutter priority and change exposure values manually. Perfect for when you know what you want; you’re always able to take your pictures, your way.

Capture it live

The HX50B is capable of taking video in full HD. Also benefiting from the optical steadyshot function, you can record high quality movies free from shaking and distortion as quickly and simply as you would take a picture.

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a HD video of a special moment could be priceless.
