Good points:
Live view
In body stabilisation
Battery life
Build quality
Decent grip
Good images, with even the kit lens
Bad points:
Not the greatest in its class at ISO values over 800.
Small viewfinder
LCD screen can be hard to view in harsh sunlight.

Other than that, not much wrong for the price.

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Easy to use, great gadgets to make your photography fun and straight forward, flip out screen which I have used MUCH more than I thought I would - nights out for dinner shooting up the table, on a tripod, low level shooting, on a telescope....the list goes on!

The camera is a great size, the image stabiliser really works as does the dust reduction/sensor cleaner mode. Eye start is great if you are new to photography or give the camera to someone who doesnt know what they are doing and you want a sharp photograph.
Bad points:
On close shots (within a few feet) the flash can cast a shadow as it catches the front of the lens, in bulb mode a counter of how long you have been exposing for would have been nice (its on the Canons and saves you having to fiddle in the dark with a watch/timer), could have had more options for bracketing - maybe 5 shots instead of 3 but I'm just being picky. Other than that there is not much I can say bad against the camera...its fantastic, a great buy, could have more pixels but the low noise levels are a bigger benefit.

John, Bracknell Keen amateur

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
I bought this as 'used' but it was in 'as new' conditon with a shutter count of less than 300! The camera provided all that I was looking for as someone who used to use a 35mm SLR years ago and was looking to take up photography again. The lack of a movie mode does not matter to me as I would buy a movie camera for that purpose. I was looking for something better than 'point & shoot' but relatively inexpensive and this 'ticked all the boxes' for me.
Bad points:
None.

Margaret, Glasgow Keen amateur

Score 6.0/10
Good points:
Easy to hold. Live view is helpful.
Bad points:
Ok for someone starting out with dslr's but overall, not much use otherwise.
Pictures are not very focused unless I am very close to subject but even then focus is a problem in parts of the subject..
Macro feature is not very good.
Depth of field are always slightly blurry. Camera sounds are too noisy.
Self cleaning is not very good. Live view is very difficult to see in sunlight, or even on a thin cloudy day.
Even on a sturdy tripod, the camera shakes at the touch of a feather.
Soon as I use the button or a timer release, the shake on release is annoying.
Difficulty in getting an all round clear and focused picture no matter which lens I use.

Digital Cameras Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

If you’re new to DSLR photography, the α DSLR-A300 is the perfect choice for you. To kick start your new hobby, a high quality DT 18-70mm f3.5-5.6 standard zoom lens is included.

10.2-megapixel resolution for beautiful photos.

The α300’s high-resolution CCD image sensor assures stunning image quality. Sony’s long experience in semiconductor and microprocessor manufacturing enables a significant reduction in the analog signal noise that tends to increase at higher pixel densities. The result is richer color and a wider dynamic range for excellent shadow and highlight detail.

Easy shooting from all angles.

Quick AF Live View sets your creativity free by delivering on the full promise of SLR-class live view shooting. Enjoy SLR functionality and image quality with the ability to shoot easily and comfortably from angles and positions you never could before.

Super SteadyShot® Inside for amazing handheld shooting.

The α300 is equipped with an advanced Super SteadyShot® image stabilization system to help prevent blurring caused by camera shake. Built right into the camera body, the system works with any α lens, enabling you to capture sharp images at shutter speeds 2.5~3.5 steps slower than would otherwise be possible.

ISO3200 sensitivity setting for low-light shooting

High-sensitivity ISO3200 and 1600 settings let you take advantage of low-light photo opportunities with confidence.

D-Range Optimizer for superior exposure balance.

An advanced D-Range Optimizer helps ensure beautifully balanced exposures in backlit situations.

  • D-Range Optimizer Advanced uses technology provided by Apical Limited.

At last, Live View shooting with true SLR-class autofocusing.

Whether you frame your subject in the optical viewfinder or the LCD monitor, you enjoy the benefits of a fast, accurate TTL (Through-The-Lens) center-cross 9-point autofocus system with continuous autofocusing to help you capture fast-moving subjects.

Center-cross 9-point AF with exclusive Eye-Start® activation

The α300 features a center-cross 9-point autofocus system with Sony’s exclusive Eye-Start® activation, which reduces missed shots by automatically focusing the camera for you as soon as you put your eye to the viewfinder.

  • Up to 2 fps with live view. Number of recordable frames varies according to shooting conditions and type of memory media.

High-position shooting.

For high-position shots, the monitor can be angled downward, enabling you to frame your subject accurately even with the camera held at arm’s length above you. As a result, you can take well-composed photos at sports events, concerts, and other public venues even when you need to shoot over the heads of a crowd.

Low-position shooting comfort.

The Clear Photo LCD can be angled upward, making it easy and comfortable to take waist-level, knee-level, or ground-level shots. Now you can assume a comfortable posture when taking macro close-ups of flowers or eye-level portraits of pets and children.

1200-zone evaluative metering for spot-on exposures.

Live view even lets you confirm the effects of exposure and white balance adjustments on the Clear Photo LCD monitor in real time—something that is impossible to do with an optical viewfinder.

Sharp, clear imaging in virtually any situation.

All digital SLR cameras are susceptible to dust contamination when changing lenses — it’s a fact of life. But the α300 employs built-in systems to keep the sensor clean, and your images beautiful.
