Confirmed purchase: 26 Nov 2012

Michel, Grenoble (France)

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
1) The only 30mm with f:1.4 capability. Other 35mms are a bit too much to be a 50mm-equivalent for Canons (35mm=56mm)
2) The power of the f/1.4 really works! No flash required for indoor/evening/overcast conditions, even for moving subjects (sports, dancing, children playing..).
3) Much more natural "look & feel" of family scenes and lively events. Closest to human vision (30mm/45° at APS-C equiv to 48mm/47° at full-format for my Canon Rebel)
4) Beautiful portraits. The high aperture makes amazing soft & fuzzy backgrounds!
5) Rediscovering the charm of fixed focal photography (moving around the subject, care for framing...).
6) The so-called low optical quality is not visible for small/medium printings. Center image quality is still very good and far enough for portraits and daily usage. The defaults occur in extreme conditions, only at usages not that lens was designed for (large posters of architecture, landscapes...)
7) The lowest price in its category.
8) Sigma build quality: compact metal construction, the HSM focus is quick and silent, the focus ring can be manually adjusted even during AF, the shader is quick and easy to manipulate, and it doesn't turn during AF (internal AF), and what a pro look for my low-end DSLR!
Bad points:
1) Medium border quality and very bad corners at high apertures (ex: in corners and at borders, letters will be impossible to read. But it shouldn't be a problem when using the high aperture where the background is meant to be fuzzy!)
2) Very short range of sharpness at high-aperture (only 24cm at 2m, f:1.4 ! ) so be careful when shooting several people on the same picture!
3) Somewhat hazy rendering all over the picture (but only visible at maximum zooming). May be a UV filter can solve the problem?
4) In my opinion, the image quality will not be sufficient for large printings of architecture/landscape pictures (but never tested)
5) A scale of focus range would have been appreciated.
6) The focus ring is a bit "hard" to turn
7) The 18-35mm f:1.4 would be a smarter choice... but for a triple price !

I'll probably never use my other lenses again. The Sigma's staying on my T2I for good. Mahalo.

Manufacturer's Description

The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM is a fast aperture standard lens for Canon digital SLR cameras. Special Low Dispersion and Extraordinary Low Dispersion glass elements are used to obtain the best possible correction for magnification and chromatic aberrations, which are particular problems for digital cameras. From 40cm minimum focusing distance to infinity, this lens creates very sharp images with high contrast. The HSM design provides quiet, high-speed autofocus shooting, as well as full-time manual focus override. With a large maximum aperture of f/1.4, this Sigma lens can perform superbly in a great range of applications, including snapshots, portraiture, indoor shooting and landscape photography.
