Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Features and connectivity. Quality of build. Overall performance. Value for money.
Bad points:
Instructions are not that easy to follow. Simple things like using the auto set up microphone don't make it obvious that you have to disable (not mute) the TV speakers but you get there eventually and when you get it right, it's good.

John, Movie fan

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Excellent sound, good selection of inputs.

Support for last.fm (and Spotify if you have the premium account).

Can stream BBC radio stations, including 5 Live Extra - which means I can listen to the cricket!

No need to buy expensive iPod dock as you can just plug your normal cable into the USB port on the front.
Bad points:
Navigation through lists of radio stations / iPod tracks is slow; info on how to go by pages is well hidden! (Use left / right arrows)

On-screen graphics are definitely SD and relatively ugly.

Changing volume puts an opaque bar over what you're watching; this should be transparent (particularly important if watching with someone who needs subtitles, as this overlays them)

For some reason, despite setting the video mode to 720p 50Hz, menu screens display in a different resolution. This means I have a black screen for a few seconds while my TV resyncs. It should stick to the mode it's been told to use.

The remote could use a backlight, particularly for the input selectors. You'll end up memorising button positions if you like to watch stuff in the dark.

Confirmed purchaser Gadget lover

Score 10.0/10
Good points:
1. Good integration with Spotify, Last.fm and other net services
2. Excellent sound quality. The sound has depth and richness
3. Lots of inputs and very good integration with my Sony Bravia LCD (TV detects the receiver and I can use the TV remote to control the receiver)
4. Great calibration system with the included mic, which sets up the various levels
5. Can control using my android phone
6. Supports multi room setup
Bad points:
1. Size: It is a bit big
2. Firmware update takes a long time
3. Spotify used to hang occasionally but the latest firmware update has been a great improvement
4. User manual could be a bit clearer (I am quite technically inclined but haven't figured out all its features yet)

Manufacturer's Description

Targeting the sweet spot where affordability meets superb functionality, the TX-NR609 looks set to be another Onkyo classic. This THX® Select2 Plus™ Certified A/V receiver handles content from all your favorite disc-based media, as well as networked and audio content from the internet (now with support for Spotify*!), iPod/iPhone, and PC. Six HDMI® inputs—including one on the front panel—provide support for 3D video and ultra-high resolution 4K video upscaling via Marvell Qdeo™. HDMI also carries master-quality audio formats from Dolby and DTS, as well as the expanded surround sound of Audyssey DSX™ and Dolby® Pro Logic® IIz. Three-stage inverted Darlington circuitry and Onkyo’s proprietary WRAT ensure a clean and compelling amplifier performance. And when audio signals are output, the 7.2-channel configuration includes twin subwoofer pre-outs for added bass impact. Meanwhile, a user-friendly on-screen display and GUI make it easy to adjust settings and navigate your content. All this and more makes the TX-NR609 an irresistible choice for the value-seeking home cinema fan.
