Good points:
Has all the buttons and switches which we expect from a DSLR. I use a Canon 5D Mk 111 but was looking for something lighter to carry when out on long days out . This fills the bill
Bad points:
The Hot Shoe design is as bit to complicated with two bits of plastic to remove from the camera . Hopefully they don't get lost

Digital Cameras Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 is based on the Micro Four Thirds standard and comes packed with sophisticated technologies like the enhanced Live MOS sensor and TruePic VII image processor, the world premiere of DUAL FAST AF and extended WiFi controls from your smartphone – all delivering outstanding image quality and performance, raising the OM-D series to a whole new level. This superiority is matched by a body design that has the perfect dimensions with a portable weight.

With 65 lenses available for the E-M1, you have access to all the lenses you could ever need. This astounding versatility is thanks to the extended compatibility of this next-generation OM-D that includes all Micro Four Thirds lenses and now all Four Thirds lenses*. The E-M1 also brings out the best in each lens by applying DUAL FAST AF with the addition of Phase Detection AF to complement Contrast AF for extremely fast and incredible visual capture. * MMF-3 adapter required to use Four Third lenses.

Imaging excellence has been taken up a notch – WiFi capabilities have been extended to give you more creative control than ever from your smartphone. Olympus have honed the precision of one of the fastest autofocus systems on the market and made the world’s most advanced 5-axis image stabilisation more intelligent, ensuring that every photo and film you shoot is as sharp as possible. And the Electronic Viewfinder gives you a bigger view and more creative options.

Perfectly sized
The new E-M1 superiority is matched by a body design that has the perfect dimensions with a portable weight. All things considered, it outperforms DSLR cameras both in terms of its size and imaging excellence.

Brilliant Image quality
Backed up by the razor-sharp imaging of the Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds lens line-up, Olympus kitted out the E-M1 with a new-generation Live MOS image sensor and TruePic VII image processor. The really special thing about this sensor and processor is that they adapt precisely to the specific lens and aperture you’re using – for spectacularly sharp photos and videos with true-to-life vibrancy, plus dramatically reduced chromatic aberration that comes with magnification.

Advanced Electronic Viewfinder
The EVF gives you a larger view even than high-end D-SLR cameras, with a whopping magnification of 1.48x (35mm equivalent: 0.74x). It also has a razor-sharp resolution of 2,360 kdot and a 29 ms time lag so short it’s not visible to the human eye. It’s engineered to empower your creativity and enhance your shooting accuracy – by allowing you to alter aspect, manipulate colours for the first time and adjust brightness to match changes in ambient light. All with an intuitive GUI and Live View before you even take a shot. It is also the only EVF on the market to offer an HDR preview, so you can take HDR shots exactly the way you imagine them.

Dual Fast AF
FAST AF – the ultra-fast autofocus system – has been advanced even further. The DUAL FAST AF, a system that brings even more speed and accuracy to all Micro Four Thirds and Four Thirds lenses. It utilises both Phase Detection AF and Contrast AF – automatically switching to the optimum AF system for the lens you’re using. You also have the option of selecting between Small Target AF and Group Target AF for FAST AF’s 81 target areas. S-AF remains one of the fastest on the market, while C-AF mode is now greatly enhanced thanks to DUAL FAST AF, even at up to approx. 6.5 frames per second.

5-axis image stabilisation system
It compensates for all kinds of blurs and jolts – be they forwards, backwards, upwards, downwards, sideways, tiltways or slantways. And that applies to any lens you happen to be using. But it doesn’t end there: the system now even detects specific axes where stabilisation is not required, such as for panning effects. And it also acts like an in-built steady hand with 5-axis stabilisation for all your movie-making too.

Dust, splash & freezeproof
Thanks to the E-M1’s practically impenetrable magnesium body with 60 gasket rings for maximum protection, you’ll never have to worry about getting your camera dirty, wet or cold again. Other cameras might claim to be freezeproof. We have enhanced the technology to really make this happen – for reliable operation down to -10°C. And with outstanding dustproof and water-resistant credentials to match, you can take this robust camera on location with you

Full control of aperture, shutter speed and Live Bulb from your smartphone
Wireless connectivity between cameras and smartphones is nothing new. But the extent of the smartphone control you get with the E-M1 certainly is new – and is set to revolutionise the way you take pictures. Besides the usual remote live view and shutter release, you can now switch shooting modes and even adjust aperture and shutter speed wirelessly in the palm of your hand. Shoot from your smartphone in Live Bulb mode as well, to avoid any possible shake during long exposure. You can also add geotags to the photos you take simply by transferring the GPS log acquired by your smartphone.
