It being winter, I haven't been able to try it out fully but so far I have found it easy to use with good results indoors. It is a very handy compact size and shape.
Bad points:
None yet. Would have liked to have a viewfinder.

Good points:
The macro is amazing on this camera, you can get really really close (2cm is completely accurate!) The detail you can pick up at that distance is very good - for example, you could take a picture of very small writing and you'll end up with an image where you can read every letter! Personally i've taken some nice shots of eyes, where you can see all of the reflections which is very pretty.

The HD video I didn't particularly buy the camera for, but since using it, I really love this feature, the picture and sound quality is excellent, and makes it easy to capture moments in video alongside your picture taking.

It's small and easy to carry around, the battery lasts a long time - I've had this camera for weeks (have taken 500+ pictures and 3-4mins video) and I still haven't had to charge it again!)

Bad points:
The only time you're going to struggle to take an image, like with most cameras is in low light, although the choice of flash is good enough that if you get the time before taking the image to test out which flash is best you can get similar warm tones to if you hadn't have used the flash at all!

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
It's tiny, so I can pop it in my pocket/handbag and always have a camera to hand.
Picture quality is superb, and particularly like the manual +/- adjustment for aperture, which was invaluable in the snow.
Excellent value for money.
Bad points:
I chose this one as opposed to other similar models because of the small shutter lag/start up lag and write lag. I'm used to a DSLR, and have always been very frustrated by compact digitals due to the delay between pressing the shutter and taking the picture and the long time from power up to ready to shoot. It's much better than my last, but still not as good as I hoped.
Hate that there is no viewfinder - large screen is useless on a sunny day - but that's the norm with this type of camera.
Would still like some more manual control, but for this price, you really can't complain.

Digital Cameras Buyers' Guide

Manufacturer's Description

This 12.2 Megapixel model has excellent 5x wideangle zoom range equivalent to 28-140mm on a traditional film camera, for everything from group shots to distant details. The Nikkor glass optics draw on many decades of Nikon’s expertise in lens manufacture.

Expeed C2 Image Processor
For the processing heart of the camera, Nikon have tailored each chip to the model it is used in, ensuring fast and efficient operation with high image quality. Many of the functions below are possible thanks to this image processor.

4-Way VR (Vibration Reduction)
The Nikon Coolpix S5100 employs a 4-way assault on shaky images. These functions are:

Optical (Lens Shift) VR – mechanically adjusts lens position to compensate for camera shake
Up to ISO 3200 sensitivity at full resolution – allows faster shutter speeds to still be used as light levels fade
Motion Detection – automatically detects subject movement within the frame and sets shutter speed and ISO sensitivity accordingly
Best Shot Selector – takes up to 10 consecutive shots and selects the sharpest one

Subject Tracking
The Coolpix S5100 uses this feature to keep your subject in focus for as long as it is in the frame.

In-Camera Editing
Tidy up your images while they’re still on the camera using built-in image editing software including Quick Retouch and D-Lighting.

Smart Portrait System
The Nikon Coolpix S5100 is a very portrait-friendly camera. It uses all the features below to make sure you get the best memories possible:

Smile Timer – Fires the shutter when your subject smiles
In-Camera Red-Eye FixTM – Automatically corrects this unsightly effect from flash pictures…you won’t even know they had red-eye
Face Priority AF for up to 12 faces in a frame – focuses on up to 12 people at once
Skin Softening
Blink Proof – Takes 2 shots in quick succession – selects the one where there is no blinking
Blink Warning – An alternative to the above which just advises you when your subject may have blinked

Scene Auto Selector
Automatically selects the most appropriate type of camera setup from 6 scene types plus Auto mode. In addition there are 18 standard scene modes for when you prefer to select the camera’s settings.

Additional Features

200 shots on one battery charge
Colour settings – Standard colour, Vivid colour, Black and White, Sepia and Cyanotype
720p HD Movies with One-Touch recording
Macro mode for close-ups as little as 0.8” from the lens
