Score 8.0/10
Good points:
It's a better overall OS with better security and better laid out menus.
Bad points:
Worst thing is compatability with other programs which may not be Microsofts fault but you need to check out the compatability with programs you will be wanting it to run.

Good points:
It's very pretty to look at! Connecting the computer to the internet was simple - I just had to plug my cable modem in and it was up and running. Updating was faster than I had anticipated, the automatic updates do take place but not so that you'd notice as there is no slowing down of the computer or associated messages.

The Firefox browser is faster under Vista than it is in my higher specification XP machine.

So far Vista has run without bugs or crashes
Bad points:
I have happily used XP for some time and found that none of my hardware drivers (Epsom printers and scanners, and a recently purchased tablet) were recognised by Vista, even when I downloaded appropriate drivers from the vendor. With the exception of MS Office and Paint Shop Pro 9, none of my utility or photo software would load.

MS Flight Simulator 2004 loaded and works better than it does under XP - but only two of my commercial add on packages loaded. Flight Simulator X loaded but barely chugged along on minimum settings - despite the system requirements being exceeded.

The security(?) system is intrusive, most simple routine tasks seem to require "permission" and is probably more of a chore to the user than a protection against nasties. My antivirus package was difficult to load despite being Vista capable but updated itself quickly and seems to be working well (I hope), however, the automatic updating does not work but it updates without problems manually and runs through the system quite quickly.

If you are happy with XP and have a good stock of hardware and software, Vista may come as a disappointment, I suggest you check on the net to see what is compatible before buying Vista and what other people think of it - I wish I had!

I think I've given Vista a fair run but in the end the cons outweigh the pros. Hopefully these are just teething problems and a future service pack will provide more support for my hardware and programmes. In the meantime I've gone back to XP.
