Good points:
Just to make it clear that I wanted this box as a direct replacement for a Sky box that I had just cancelled the subscription on. I don’t believe that anyone (in the UK) would buy one of these and then pay for a satellite dish to be installed.

We made a note of all the TV channels that we watched over a week and Freesat was a better match for us as it had more of the viewed channels than Freeview.

It was a simple direct replacement - disconnecting the two satellite cables and swopping them over along with the broadband connection to the Freesat box. The box started up, carried out some checks, asked for our postcode so as to receive the correct regional channels and that was it. It was a really easy changeover.

The Freesat box does everything (and more) that the Sky+box did. Pause live TV, record programmes and stream programmes over broadband.Yes the remote control is quite different and it takes a bit of getting used to but I disagree with the previous posts that Freesat is less intuitive and that you couldn’t delete recorded programmes. If you are used to the layout of the sky remote it will take a bit of getting used to but I actually believe that the Freesat remote is better laid out. It is of better quality and has more positive action switches. You also can delete programmes but there isn’t the option to delete a programme directly from the listings menu. Only when viewing the programme does the delete option comes up. I think that the box is more intuitive. For instance, if you turn off the TV then the Freesat box automatically turns itself off.

One of the best features is the opportunity to view earlier programmes direct from the listings page. You can scroll back a weeks TV and the most popular programmes are listed and the box will stream the programme to you via your broadband. You don’t have to download them.

The box will automatically let you know if there is a HD version of the channel that you want to watch and you just press the OK button to transfer to it.

Another good point is the Showcase where the box shows you a series of tiles of upcoming programmes and you can decide to record them. It lists around 50 programmes across a range of genres.

One of the best features is the way that the box handles programme clashes, it lists the actual programme names and you simply decide which one to cancel, it is far easier to use than Sky was.

Yes there are times when we can’t find anything to watch in over 200 channels but at least we know that we aren’t paying £30 per month now. The box will pay for itself in less than five months and then we have free TV. So absolutely no regrets, apart from not buying one sooner.
Bad points:
It takes a bit longer to start-up and there isn’t a display to show you if you aren’t watching a programme in real-time

Manufacturer's Description

The benefits of Freesat+

First and foremost, the range of viewing choices is extraordinary with 150 Freesat channels as standard, and there are 5 free HD channels on offer too.

The Freesat+ Digital Satellite Recorder brings you all of this and more with its fabulous functionality. Including the outstanding programme guide feature, you’ll be able to find the programmes you love far more easily.

The advantages of free time

With its true twin tuners, the Freesat freetime HDR-1000S Satellite Recorder allows you to record two channels whilst watching another – 2 channels are on the same multiplex, so you can be sure not to miss out on your favourite programmes while watching something in the moment. You’ll be able to create a veritable library of your favourite shows to view time and again at your leisure.

The Showcase feature from Freesat+ will tantalise you with the day’s top TV picks, and there’s the facility to pause and rewind live TV, so you can replay your favourite moments to your heart’s content. If this isn’t enough, the brilliant scroll-back EPG with selected broadcaster catch up services lets you see shows you’ve missed from the past 7 days via BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, 4oD and Demand 5 offers great online viewing with clever recording and recommended TV content with Showcase and Video On-Demand.

The built-in 500GB hard drive can store up to 125 hours of HD programmes or 300 hours of SD programmes, guaranteeing a satisfying TV viewing experience any time.
