Given the limited range of available hydraulic disc set-ups it’s tough, but with some intelligent spec choices and a key part or two from some component manufacturers it can be done. The Equilibrium Disc 20 features the same heat treated Reynolds frame as it’s costlier big brother the Equilibrium Disc Limited, but adds TRP’s highly rated HyRd mechanical to hydraulic disc calipers and pairs them with Shimano 105 11speed mechanical STI’s to strip out much of the expense – while retaining the vast majority of the performance benefit of a hydraulic caliper set-up. We’ve managed to keep the Aksium One Disc wheelset used by the Limited and Ti models and still managed to deliver a competitive package too.
Classic seamless Chromoly (as above) but heat-treated to boost tensile strength. Think of it as Chromoly on steroids. It’s heated to around 1600F whereby a structural change in the steels’ crystal lattice occurs (a stronger, more uniform orientation). As it’s stronger we can away with using less of it so thinner butts are the order of the day here (varying wall thickness down to 0.7/0.4/0.7mm), helping to achieve a lighter overall frame weight.
Generous clearances and eyelets for full-length mudguards and a rear rack mean the Equilibrium Disc morphs quickly and effortlessly into an all-weather load carrier.
TRP’s revolutionary Hy/Rd brakes combine traditional cable actuation with hydraulic power to great effect, allowing you to enjoy all the benefits associated with hydraulic braking (good power and modulation, self centring pads, minimal maintenance) without the expensive dedicated hydraulic shifter setup. We’ve also combined them with Jagwire KEB-SL compressionless outer for optimum performance. The devil’s in the detail!
