Beverley, Occasional user

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
Used this for a 3 week trip all over Northern Spain and Western France. Had some fantastically useful features, including the flight checking tool (had to meet friends flying in), and easy-to-use 'find points of interest' (hotels, fuel, shopping centres, museums etc) either near current location, route, destination or anywhere at all. Liked the 'trail' feature showing where you had been before, and the 'last location' allowing you to find where you parked the car.
Bad points:
Occasionally chose an odd route. Pronunciation of Spanish (and Basque) road names totally bizarre - but always possible to disable text-to-speech option of course. Requirement to put in a street name for navigation purposes - would be nice to be able just to say 'town centre'.

Kirsty, Farnborough use it often

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Mostly pretty straight forward and easy to use, re routes rapidly within seconds. Love the cheapest petrol station option and easy to mount in car. comes with dashboard disk which is dead simple to fix unit on if you don't want the unit on the windscreen. has pedestrian mode and last location function for those occasions you forget where you parked! lovely big screen, graphics nice and clear and it's been pretty accurate, haven't been sent down any silly routes yet. Some of the reviews i read talked of the voice being a horrible robotic woman and that it was difficult to hear, haven't had any such problems, there is a male voice you can select which is quite pleasant and i have never needed to put the unit on full volume (turned it down when i got it as it was too loud). Really pleased with it, would recommend it others
Bad points:
occasionally gets the destination wrong, thankfully had map with me when it told me i'd arrived at my destination and it wasn't the right road! only annoying feature i have found is that when you are entering an address it comes up with road choices after each letter you input and you have to keep pressing the back arrow to type another letter. When it's a long address and the street you want isn't in the list it brings up, you have to hit back arrow throughout the whole thing which can be a bit frustrating. loading map update took several days as website kept not working. Didn't come with manual - ended up having to print it off.

Mike, N Yorkshire Always use sat nav

Score 6.0/10
Good points:
Clean modern design good screen & touch responsiveness.

Speed limits seem pretty accurate for roads I've used.

Clear instructions, even if they are sometimes misleading re the route.
Bad points:
Seems slow to update position on map compared to my steam driven old TomTom One v1.

Also seems slow to re-calculate when you miss a turn or go a known route it doesn't suggest.

Traveling form England to Scotland search will not find a UK postcode unless you change county! and visa versa travelling south.

Peter, Farnborough, Hampshire Use it for work

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
For me the 1690 replaced my old and very slow (original) TomTom 1 (circa 1980:-)). My old TomTom still working well, but modern times and the lack of an update led me to consider an upgrade.

The 1690 looks pleasant enough, yet feels a little basic to the touch. That aside, it's very intuitive and logical. nuLink! (sim-card functionality free for the first year) is fab, giving live traffic, google local search and fuel prices. This alone justifies the expense and nothing else truly detracts the 1690 from being a decent navigator, with clear graphics, lane assist and fuel saving ecoRoute software.

Cheap, cheerful and does what it says on the box. I can't ask for more...
Bad points:
To be fair I had to research how to input French post codes (Disneyland Paris) and couldn't work out grid references (still can't), but for everything else this little machine has been great.
