Some customer reviews of Dell Alienware M11x

Most helpful reviews

Micha, Deventer / Netherlands Music, gaming or video fan

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
m11x R1:

- Great battery life.
- Excellent design and led colour capability.
- With SSD built in, totally silent laptop (till the fan kicks in that is).
- Good feeling and typing keyboard.
- Processor good enough for any processes I use. Even running Ableton Live with multiple VST plugins.
Bad points:
- Dell/Nvidia GPU driver updates for the R1 is no longer available, you'll have to do with the old 197.xx drivers, while Nvidia is already at 260.xx,
If you want to keep switchability between integrated and dedicated GPU you'll have to stick to the 197.xx drivers, or do the workaround in testmode, which I dont like to enable 260.xx switchability.
Massive customer dissatisfaction that update support is already lacking on a system that's not even on the market for 1 year!!!

- No eSata or USB 3.0! High speed connections are wanted nowadays, why at least not an eSata port?!
Would be essential I you want to run recent games of external drives.
- 1394 firewire chipset is Jmicron, why not Texas instruments for this money?
- Screen could have been larger, screen bezel this size is totally unnecessary.
- Weight is on the heavy side for it's size.
- Glossy screen, brought on a anti-glare foil short after receipt.
- Touchpad texture too rough and very annoying, even the tiniest of crums stay stuck in the texture.

Score 7.0/10
Good points:
Small, light weight, graphics, features...
Bad points:
Structurally (Hinges especially) seems fragile. Going with a small cpu means you give up key features which takes some getting used to/sacrifice. (DVD having to be external and to install software takes one, Keyboard is tightly fitted so hands are closer,...) That said, its not meant to replace your desktop. It is lightweight and enjoyable.

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Very versatile and portable.
Great battery life.
Fast.
Bad points:
The 1.3 Ghz processor is not quite enough for some of the more graphic-intensive games.
For me, the biometric facial recognition software became annoying and buggy. I don't particularly need it, but anyone who would may have a problem with it.
Relatively heavy for it's size.
To get the full (advertised) 8 hours of batter life, everything must be turned down to minimum. If the power consumption is set to balanced, the batter life is really about 5 1/2 to 6 hours.

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
this laptop is great for general web surfing, email etc that ultraportalbe laptops are good at. i can get about 5-6ish hours of doing activities like that. but then you can overclock it and change the graphics so i can play games! build quality is great (but a little weighty) and the laptop runs very cool (though sometimes the fan can get a little loud)
Bad points:
only bad point would probably be the keyboard. Though it feels excelent to type on, it is in the UK layout which is taking some time to get use to. Still, i had the option to upgrade to a US layout, but this keyboard is still great. They at least included stickers which i could've stuck over the keyboard so it's in the US layout which is very thoughtful

Good points:
I'm able to play Mass Effect 2 on it! This makes for a nice platform as a casual gamer and for doing general computer stuff like data entry and surfing about.
Bad points:
Battery life isn't technically 4+ hours, i've gotten 3 hours out of it by toning all the power settings down.
