Score 10.0/10
Good points:
- Very decent image quality, surprisingly low noise for a compact. Clean ISO 400, usable ISO 800 which I never managed with any of the other compacts I've ever owned.
- 'Made in Japan' and has the build quality to show for it.
- Fantastic Full HD video with full-time image stabilization and zoom usable while shooting.
- Satisfying zoom range that starts from a respectably wide 28mm equivalent focal length.
- Full manual controls (a rarity at this price point)
- Supported by CHDK ;-)

In short, a very decent all-rounder and an excellent travel cam. I see it replacing both my SLR and my video camera in my travels, where luggage size/weight is always a limiting factor.
Bad points:
- Ergonomics are not up to scratch. Nothing major, but several little annoyances: Flash pops open on start-up and can be easily obstructed by one's left hand, which forces the cam into flash-off mode. Stereo mike holes on either side of the lens can be obstructed by careless fingers lingering on the front surface of the cam. Rotating dial on the back doubles as a four way rocker switch, but has no markings to show what each of its four 'directions' does. Wide format (16:9) rear LCD is a bit of a pain to find proper screen protectors for.
Incidentally, I have found that the best way to handle this cam is like an SLR, i.e. with the right hand bracing the right edge, right index finger on the shutter release, and the palm of the left hand supporting the cam from underneath. This way you won't be blocking the flash and your fingers will probably be far away enough not to block the microphone holes either ;-)
- Turning on the GPS feature can and will eat up your battery like crazy (as is the case in all portable devices that have a built in GPS facility!).
- Video file compression not as efficient as with certain competitors. 8 GB of free space will only get you about 30 min of video in highest quality settings. I would definitely recommend packing a couple of spare batteries (non-Canon equivalents are cheap and readily available in the market) and at least a couple of high capacity SD cards if you're going on a long trip.
