Score 9.0/10
Good points:
The picture quality is fantastic, really sharp. It's lightweight enough to not become a chore if you are filming for long periods. Battery life is quite stunning too, I've had it for over a month now and have yet to recharge it (although it does need to be plugged into the mains for downloading footage)
Bad points:
I wouldn't say these are bad points but more considerations you should make before you purchase. the USB2 file transfer feels slow compared to firewire, still not a biggy, go make a cup of tea while it's doing it. You also need to plug it into the mains when transferring footage to a computer, sometimes this can be a small hassle if you use a laptop like me and sometimes would like to transfer footage when you are on the move.

AVCHD is a new codec and has only been around a short while, you shouldn't have any problems on a PC (Sony Vegas is great) but if you own a pre Intel Mac importing AVCHD footage is a real pain, you will need to purchase additional software (albeit very cheap and reliable) to convert the AVCHD footage to Apple ProRes 422 footage before you can edit it. Get VoltiacHD from but it does take HOURS!!! to download the footage from your Camera to your Mac as it's re-encoding it at the same time.

If you have an Intel Mac all the latest Mac software iMovie08, Final Cut Express and Final Cut Pro (6.0.1 and above) all support importing AVCHD footage.

I have both a PowerPC Mac and an Intel Mac Laptop and I will NEVER use the PowerPC Mac to download or edit camera footage it just takes far to long.

I imagine this will affect quite a small group of people these days but I thought it was worthwhile sharing it with you. PowerPC Mac users you would be much better going for an HDV codec camera or consider updating your Mac :-)

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
Both exposure and image quality of the HG10 are excellent at this price band and would hartily recommend for that reason alone.
Bad points:
The battery life in real world use is somewhat limited, and would therefore reccomend an additional high capacity battery. There is no option to record moving images onto the Mini SD card, nor the option to record in std definition in MPEG format, and conversion from AVCHD to MPEG2 takes forever. Although brurning content to either blu-ray or AVCHD DVD is very simple and quick.

The stylishly compact HG10 records High Definition (HD) movies straight to Hard Disk Drive (HDD). Storing more memories in Full HD 1080 quality (AVCHD), you’ll never run out of recording space.

Canon Full HD CMOS
Let HD movies bring memories to life. The HG10 uses a Canon Full HD CMOS video sensor, with advanced noise reduction technology and an RGB Primary Colour Filter – for sharp, noise-free video and vivid colours.

Canon HD Video Lens
Canon camcorders inherit the expertise of the world’s biggest maker of broadcast lenses. Incorporating a Super Range Optical Image Stabilizer, the HG10’s 10x optical zoom lens is specifically designed for HD – for unrivalled image quality.

Instant AF
Instant AF helps ensure movies and photos are always in focus. By using two sensors – one for speed, one for absolute accuracy – Instant AF makes shooting HD video easier and keeps digital photos free from blur. The Focus Assist function aids manual focusing.

15 hours of video, hundreds of photos
The extra capacity of an HDD lets you record for longer: store up to 15 hrs of HD video. The HG10 is also a fully-featured digital camera – 3.1MP photos are saved to MiniSD card.

DIGIC DV II is the HG10’s brain. Specifically designed by Canon for HD, it can shoot movies and still images at the same time. Video and photos are processed independently, ensuring that both appear in superb colour.

Intuitive controls
An intuitive Navigation Control Dial provides quick and easy access to key functions. Playing back video is effortless: scroll through a list of recordings or select a scene from the thumbnail menu to instantly review movies on the 2.7" Multiangle Vivid LCD screen.

Quick Start and extended battery life
At the push of a button, Quick Start powers up the camcorder from Standby mode almost instantly. The HG10’s battery provides over an hour of recording on a single charge.

All the connections you need
Capture enhanced audio with an external microphone and monitor sound recording more closely via the headphone jack; an Advanced Accessory shoe lets you attach a range of other peripherals. When you’ve finished recording, connect to a TV using HDMI or a PC via USB. PictBridge makes it easy to print photos.

A supplied Corel Application Disc provides software for easy editing and management of AVCHD movies on a PC.
