Good points:
I would describe this printer as old fasioned. And that is mostly a compliment. Do you remember the days of the old laser printers. Those heavy beasts with flaps and drawers that just went on and on. Well I dont know how long it will go on but it looks promising according to other reviews. Many users claim long life and certainly all the parts seem to be available, providing you dont end up spending more on them than the original price. Also there are lots of geeky fixes for this and that error codes if and when they pop up.

The good.
Printing is very speedy for a colour laser after the usual warm up. Setup on my home network was a doddle once you work out if you have "peer to peer" or "server" configuration. In "deep sleep" its silent and soon wakes up. It has a strait paper path if you open the back tray, meaning envelopes and 160gms paper will go through. The manual paper tray on the front has adjustable paper guides and will also take a small stack of paper on its lift and slide out support. This tray also has a fairly deep throat so that paper is drawn in straight and true. The software print control is simple enough and easy to configure. Also if you have an Apple or Android tablet/phone, Brother have a free no frills "Print and Scan" App that make it possible for you to send a document to the printer direct over wifi, if you have a wifi router. Brill. Oh yes £50 cash back! (but see the bad - starter cartriges)

The bad.
On startup its flippin noisy! Once its calmed down it settles to a slighly annoying hum/buz until it goes to sleep. Ahh. The manual duplex works but is a fiddle. There is a pop up on screen "helper" but its not always obvious which way round the new stack of paper should go. Beleive me Ive tried but have wasted more paper than saved by printing the other side the wrong way up!! Envelopes do crinkle some, even using the back tray. The cabling outlets at the back are untidy. The mains is at the bottom one side and the data sockets on the top at the other. If you intend to use the back tray you will soon see why that is an annoyance. Oh yes its big and needs lots of space if you use the back tray. With the back tray down its 28.5 inches front to back. Add another 10 inches to the front if you have the manual paper tray fully open!! The driver software may be a bit crude for some. The web based management is like something out of DOS. But it works. The supplied cartriges are low capacity starter ones! Why? You dont just want to start printing with this printer do you? Ford would never sell a car if it had starter tyres. Someone should stop this rip off by going to law. All printer makers are the same. That doesnt make it right. Shame on them! I suppose the £50 cash back covers that! Thankfully there are lots of remanufactured cartriges available and bottles of top up toner.

Its a mixed bag and time will tell if the bag is mixed the right way. But for me, other than that pesky manual duplex, Im on the plus side of happy.
