Score 8.0/10
Good points:
Drivers for Linux/Unix OSs are available on the website.
Installation instructions are available on the website too.
Compact design.
Economical price.
Bad points:
Drivers issued in limited formats (only rpm and deb -- it is necessary to convert them back to tar.gz and there are no instructions for post-install on the website.) The installation instructions on the website are only for the trivial cases where the installation will be handled automatically by the package manager. There is not even a list of file locations.

Scanner appears to "lose" its configuration once the machine sleeps. (It seems to be necessary to rerun brsaneconfig3 to remake the config, but there is probably a better way. This should be documented.)

Charles, King's Lynn Business user

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
The scanner with its automatic document feeder is an excellent solution for filing letters and receipts. It's easy to create custom settings for colour, black-and-white, different resolutions and destinations. Scanning from the desktop is quick and easy.

Print quality seems fine. The optional straight-through path for heavy paper stock seems a good idea, though I haven't tested it. So far, toner consumption is as predicted, so running costs should be reasonable. Shipping with a full-size toner cartridge is a nice touch.

Easy to set up on a Mac network.
Bad points:
Paper tray is a bit flimsy and the guides don't always fit the paper stack snugly, so I've had a few pages print at an angle.

When using Preview.app to print PDFs made in InDesign CS4, black prints as dark grey and the resulting screened effect makes small text less legible. This is a complex issue: printing the PDF from Adobe Reader is OK, printing straight from InDesign is OK, and InDesign's standard black / rich black settings make no difference. It's only a niggle, but one that my old Lexmark laser printer didn't suffer from.

The supplied Mac scanner control software is clunky: it works well enough for documents, but for photos there's little control, and I can't get the TWAIN driver to work with Photoshop or Image Capture on MacOS 10.5.

Supplied OCR software has poor accuracy compared to the excellent ABBYY Finereader supplied with DEVONthink Pro Office.

"Scan" button on the front can't be set up for one-touch operation (you have to choose scan type and destination machine), so not especially useful.
