Most helpful reviews

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Bought this after reading many reviews, knew nothing of Asus & hadn't seen this laptop anywhere.
Screen excellent for photos. Wide range of external connections.
Quick start up since no optical drive
Would buy it again.
Bad points:
External power supply is a bit big.
Not obvious as to what external optical drive to get and the Asus BluRay I bought + its power supply is not really portable.
Windows 8 takes some getting used to. It's all down to the mouse pad!!

Score 10.0/10
Good points:
The start-up time really is a few seconds, and light enough to carry around without fuss. The soundbooster (SonicMaster) that is accompanied as a peripheral also improves the sound quality immensely.
Bad points:
Because of the aluminium build, the wi-fi switches off occasionally.

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
Great screen, performance and battery life. Weight is actually less than 2kg.
Bad points:
Cannot replace SSD hard drives - I would have liked to have been able to upgrade the 256GB. Still, a portable USB 3.0 disk doesn't weigh much either.

Score 8.0/10
Good points:
A very well built, well presented laptop with excellent specs for what is essentially an ultraportable laptop (the 15" screen size is not generally associated with this classification, but the weight in this case (appox 2 kg) certainly is).
CPU sailed through benchmarks delivering some very impressive scores (4842 PC Mark 07) and GPU faired very well in my gaming tests (in short can play all current games fluently although the details / resolution may have to be turned down a little to play some of the more demanding titles fluently eg BF3.)
So in short a very attactive bit of kit with enough going on under the hood to keep power users and gamers content!
Bad points:
Unfortunately I am finding working with Windows 8 a little tedious, not really designed with MAK interface in mind. Plus I have run into some of the usual teething problems typical of a new OS in it's infancy (program incompatibility etc). Although this should not directly reflect on the laptop itself, ASUS are currently only offering driver downloads for windows 8 on their support website. Personally I would love to load good old stable reliable Windows 7 back onto this laptop, even if only in a dual boot.
Lastly the idle fan noise on this laptop is a little louder than I would have liked. Although having said that the fan noise under load is not anywhere near as loud as other high end laptops I have used in the past. Hopefully the thermal policy will be fixed in a future BIOS update.

Laptop Buyers Guide

Manufacturer's Description

The ASUS ZENBOOK U500VZ indisputably proves that a high-performance ultraportable is possible without sacrificing slimline style. Wrapped in a sleek aluminium shell with unique ‘spun’ hairline finish, the ZENBOOK U500VZ packs an incredibly powerful 3rd Generation Intel® Core™ i7 quad-core processor. Combined with optional NVIDIA® GT650M graphics and up to 512GB SSD storage, the result is a blisteringly fast ultraportable that dramatically outperforms the competition.

Despite measuring a mere 19.7mm at its thickest point, the ZENBOOK U500VZ has a 15” Full HD display that works brilliantly for both productivity and entertainment purposes alike. IPS technology gives vivid colours and a crisp image that can be seen from almost any angle, while the anti-glare coating eliminates distracting reflections. Comfort is a key feature with ZENBOOK U500VZ — literally. The full-size keyboard has a separate numeric keypad and the automatic backlight makes minute adjustments to its brightness according to ambient lighting for fuss-free typing at all times.

Flexible storage choices mean the ZENBOOK U500VZ can meet a variety of application needs. Dual SSD drives deliver outstanding performance with up to 512GB capacity, while the combination of a 128GB SSD and 500GB hard drive offer the perfect balance between high-performance and high-capacity storage. Battery life is equally impressive and ASUS Super Hybrid Engine II technology delivers up to 25% longer mains-free use when it’s needed most.
