Clearly faster than my 5 year old Travelmate. But given 5 years of development, and an SSD, it's not as dramatically faster as I hoped it would be. I'm waiting for the day when we click an application and it's there, ready to use. But usefully faster none-the-less.

Acer's policy of obscure model names and confusing numbers is completely daft and makes the choice of a (of any) machine much more difficult for customers. Please sort this out.

Neither the retailer, nor Acer UK or Acer Europe seemed able to answer the basic technical question as to whether this laptop had an internal SATA 2 or SATA 3 interface to the primary HDD. Which made an upgrade to an SSD very difficult. Surely quite a few customers would consider this these days.

Acer Direct did not offer a memory upgrade. Given 4GB upgrade was < £16 from Crucial it made sense to immediately upgrade this machine to 8GB. The type of memory needed was also difficult to determine without opening up the memory cover.

The previous laptop without a number pad was overall a much better design. I would think only a small percentage of users actually use a number pad regularly, so a model of the same spec with out one would appeal, providing a much better and well space keyboard. Those that need one can surely be provided with an add-on USB one. It ought to be relatively simple to provide some simple means of clipping this onto the right hand side so making it solid for those users. So for the rest of us it make general data entry slower - I have to look at the keyboard much more often in order to be sure to hit the Delete key - now embedded in the top row, Enter, backspace key etc. And finding the cursor keys is slower.

The quality of the keyboard itself is poorer then the one I used previously.

Secondly I find the provision of all ports along both side edges worse than having the majority on the back edge. It's fairly obvious that some connectors will not be used frequently. Kingston lock, Ethernet, video connectors. The Kingston lock, Ethernet connector both mean cables / wire coming out of the machine across the natural place for mouse action. Similarly the power connector sticks out of the left side, but being a right angle connector this is not too bad,

Some connectors such as USB would be used often, so are correctly on the side. So I can see the currently arrangement has little to do with user convenience, but mostly to do with placement of the battery and possibly motherboard design, so this is a negative step for the user.

Since I chose a wireless mouse for this machine it means the USB receiver which sits permanently in one USB port is near the front, rather than tucked away near the back, meaning it gets touched / banged more often by mistake.

The DVD is a poor design. Trying to find the OPEN button is very difficult even in broad daylight. A small plastic bump (as some keyboards keycaps use) would help tactile location.

Finally, whilst not Acer's fault, I have to say that Windows 7 is a step down from XP. The single advantage I've discovered so far is the method of renaming a file, where the prefix part of the name is highlighted, and not the whole name. COPY under Win7 is awful with long text explanations, so that each time I have to read all the options before I can proceed.

Forgetting each separate windows locations and size is another backward step. Given all these niggles I will probably get Windows 8 once the dust has settled after launch. Assuming no major problems, I will install, and then have to work my way through the 'workarounds' 3rd party software developers will hopefully provide for all the nonsense MS have added in.
