Good points:
Everything works with Ubuntu. Once you change the SATA DVD drive to IDE mode in the BIOS.
Good screen - bright and good visibility even in daylight.
Great keyboard for programming on. No stupid keys in the wrong place for no good reason.
Battery life is good if you disable the wireless or replace the wireless with something decent.
Bad points:
The built in wireless was awful. One of the worst built in wireless cards I've ever used. Loses connections even when you are next to the access point and eats the battery.

Good points:
Very light and the keyboard has good sized keys. The battery life is excellent, we wanted a computer we could use on the boat without having to run the generator, and this has proved successful.
Bad points:
My previous Acer laptops have all had a mat finish screen, this Acer's shiny surfaced screen does give a lot of glare of both daylight and you have to be careful where you positon yourself in relation to the lighting environment. the keyboard although well laid out it does look far less robust then my earlier machines, but I suppose this has something to do with how incredibly light the laptop is.

Good points:
I'm tech-savvy and a demanding user, and I usually expect a lot for my money. I was somewhat concerned that the CPU clock speed would let this laptop down, but this has not been the case at all... Granted, I don't use the laptop for gaming so can't comment on that aspect, but for all other tasks (browsing, email, visual studio, nero, p2p, movies, music) it performs well within acceptable levels - I'm still amazed that the CPU only uses 10W max.

Can't comment on out-of-the-box performance (it shipped with Vista pre-installed) as the first thing I did was install a fresh copy of Windows 7 x64. You can grab all the required Win 7 drivers / apps from the Acer website.

Resolution and screen quality is great too (I've owned Acers before and I've always been impressed by the screens). I've read that a few people complained that it's too reflective, but I haven't noticed this.

I like the design and also the fact that it doesn't heat up, even after prolonged use. Battery life is great too - it's easy to get 6-8 hours on a full charge as long as you're not running cpu-intensive apps. Boot-up time is average, starting up from Hibernate mode is fine so I would suggest you set the power options to Hibernate when closing the lid.

All in all, I am very pleased with my purchase.
Bad points:
None - excellent for the money.

Manufacturer's Description

More than 8 hours battery life (All Day Computing), ultra-light weight and sophisticated design, all at the right price. This is the Aspire Timeline. With the Aspire Timeline series, Acer has taken a big, if not the biggest step forward in the concept of mobility, an area where finding the perfect equilibrium between light weight and autonomy has always been the number one priority. The Aspire Timeline series was conceived around the duration of the battery and introduces an entirely new way to render the system lighter, more efficient and less harmful to the environment. From now on you can turn on your Aspire Timeline in the morning and turn it off in the evening without ever having to charge it! Light as your time can be! * More than 8 hours battery life!

  • You can surf the web or chat to your friends, watch films or look at pictures all day without having to look for an empty wall socket. One push of the Acer PowerSmart key activates an Energy-saving system that takes battery life over the eight-hour threshold.
  • Light weight and ultra-slim!
  • The Aspire 5810T is more or less one inch thick (just 24 mm) and weighs only 5.3 lbs. The Aspire Timeline paves the way to a new dimension, in which the limits of space and time are replaced by absolute freedom.
  • Elegant design!
  • The minimalist look of the Aspire Timeline hides small details that make it the supreme champion of elegance and efficiency. The touch sensitive keys for the Wi-Fi, Backup and Power Smart features are positioned right above the keyboard; to the side, the button to open the optical drive, and right next to the touchpad, there is a button that blocks it when you dont need it. The keyboard is soft-touch, which makes writing softer on the fingers while the touchpad brings multi-gesture functionality to the notebook, allowing you to flick through pages the same way you would a newspaper and to zoom in and out with simple movements of your hand.
  • And what a price!
  • When you get your hands on an Aspire Timeline youll be surprised at just how little something youve always wanted actually costs.
