Harry, Newcastle upon Tyne Semi-pro photographer

Score 9.0/10
Good points:
It's reassuringly heavy and sturdy due to the large amount of glass making up the wide aperture (f/2.8). The image quality is far better than the standard Canon f/3.5-f/5.6 18-55mm kit lens offering much sharper focus and much less chromatic aberration. The barrel controls are rubberised for non-slip use and rotate approx. a quarter of a turn only which means you never need to change your grip while adjusting the zoom or the focus. There are two other switches, one engages or releases the auto focus and the other is a zoom lock at 17mm to prevent transportation movement. The later locks the lens at its shortest, since the barrel extends as the focal length is increased. I do not use this personally, because there is sufficient damped friction that prevents this anyway, but I imagine after many years of use this friction may reduce due to wear and lubrication ageing. The lens is supplied with a petal shaped hood which can be stored on the lens in the reverse orientation to save gadget bag space. In practice this hood works well keeping bright light off the front element of the lens when the light source is outside the focal length's angle of acceptance, hence flare is reduced and effectively eliminated. In conclusion this lens is a great performer and a cost effective upgrade to the supplied kit lens of a Canon entry level DSLR.
Bad points:
When using this lens on an entry level Canon DSLR (a 450D in my case) the camera-lens combination sits lens down due to its weight. However, all my longer focal length lenses do this too so it is not too much of an issue.

Superb quality for the money.

Feels solid in the hand
I bought this instead of getting a kit lens after much research and as a beginner would highly recommend this if you are on a budget.
