I auditioned two other budget speakers before buying the Diamond 9.1s: Kef Cresta 30 and Q Accoustics 1010. Neither compare to the Diamond 9.1, and listening to these speakers made me realise how vital it is to match the tweeter and woofer together. The Kef Cresta 30s were too brash, and the Q Accoustics had too prominent a mid-range. The Whafedales are perfectly balanced. These speakers also look good -- dull and understated. Who wants speakers to have a "shouty" design? Not me.
-
These are at the high end of the budget range, but the extra money is well worth it. In fact, I'd say that this is where quality speakers start. Anything cheaper than this is a false economy.

Got these to replace accident damaged Celestion 5 speakers, and hooked them up to my 10 year old Denon system - excellent straight out of the box, and getting better day by day. Can't fault them in any way - ideal as very good entry level kit.

Surprisingly 'big' sound for such a modestly sized unit.
Shape is attractive and finish very satisfactory
Bi-wiring nice if can make use of it (I couldn't)
-
None that aren't of my own making
Bass a bit less-well controlled than I had expected although this is almost certainly due to being installed too high (Because of lack of space in my living room, I was forced to install on top of cupboards in recesses on either side of chimney breast. Proximity of the ceiling is probably colouring the bass.)

For the price, sound quality is excellent across the range.
Effective at low volume, sound mantains a good comfortable balance at higher levels.
Well built.
No bad habits.
I had a pair of Mission 732s before which were twice the price with livelier and more dynamic sound - but were too intrusive at anything other than low/mid volume with other people in the house.

These speakers are tremendous value for money. They sound great even though they are placed on a shelf close to a wall which is not an ideal situation. They are very tolerant because the sound is clear and well balanced despite the circumstances. All the good reports I have read about these speakers over the years were accurate!

The curved cabinets are probably not to everyone's taste, but I like them.

The speakers have a great mid-range warm sound, when turned up, produce a solid bass and a very balanced tone. Being my very first purchase of speakers, i am a little inexperienced in the quality of speakers and the sound they produce, but i am very satisfied with my buy. Although lacking a little (only a little) treble, this can soon be sorted out with a decent amp with tone control.
-
Like i previously mentioned, these speakers are lacking a little treble, in my opinion, apart from that, i havent encountered any other bad points.

Smart, compact design; suitably hefty, with a sound good for the size of the room in which they were installed. (I am using them as main speakers for a mid-range turntable/CD/amp set-up rather than as part of a 5:1 cinema sound arrangement).
-
Instructions could have been a bit clearer. I'm no fool, but nor am I a hi-fi buff and the diagrams/instructions relating to setting up the speakers for a hi-fi (cf. home cinema) were not the clearest I've encountered. A minor gripe, but I'm an ex-journalist and former magazine editor; better English in instruction manuals would save a lot of people a lot of time the (English-speaking) world over...

Sound quality is very clear. Bass is good at volume. Drivers are outstanding quality. Strong cabinets.
-
They are long and front heavy, meaning if you wish to screw a bracket into the rear of the speaker through the pre drilled holes, the speakers tend to sag. You need very strong brackets to hold these up. Careful with the edges of these speakers as you can easily pull off some of the vinyl covering (only an issue when handling....when they are up it's not an issue)

Amazing sound from a relatively small speaker. After using large floor standing Kef's for some years I needed something smaller, I didn't expect too much at this price however. Highly recommended.

The sound quality is good given the size of the speakers but to get the best of the Bass sounds I have to use the Loudness button on the HiFi to boost these. I suspect that the purchase of a sub-woofer would help a great deal.

Also known as: wharfedale diamond 9 1
Manufacturer's Description
Since its creation in 1981, the Wharfedale’s Diamond has enjoyed a formidable reputation within the field of two-channel stereo reproduction. Regarded by journalists around the world as the real entry point to hi-fidelity sound reproduction, this has been reinforced by numerous awards and commendations.
Each component is designed as part of a whole, without a single ‘off-the-shelf’ part. Every part interacts simply and effectively with the rest, to produce a sound that is detailed, refined and supremely natural.
The new Diamond 9 is designed using the finest materials and technology in its class Diamond 9, yet again, redefines the standard of reproduction available. Whilst retaining many of the core features that made Diamond 8 successful, Diamond 9 introduces a raft of new features.
