Great PVR, series link is good, EPG good, customisable, can get recordings off unit and put on DVD etc via computer, huge hard disk space, upscaling freeview picture is v good quality.
-
Remote a bit cluttered and ugly, sometimes misses the first few seconds off start of recordings, but this is more down to the freeview clock being slightly out (and the bbc starting programs a few seconds early!). No sky like now&next - you have to use EPG or scroll through channels. Slightly expensive compared to some other similar products.

The Topfield range of products is unique in allowing transfer of program data to a computer. Until computer based PVRs are able to switch computer's on and off for carrying scheduled recordings then a standalone PVR which can "talk" to a computer, like the Topfield, is essential.
The larger disc drive
-
The Topfield disc, for speed's sake, needs to be seen just as another drive by the computer, not the slow transfer method currently available. The new EPG system could be good, but is currently a bit of a mess because the quality of data entry, and clock maintenance, by TV companies is sub-contracted to a myriad of firms and hence like a camel, is very ugly and very variable in quality

Very easy to use. Nice to be able to record 2 programmes simultaneously. The huge disc space makes it most unlikely that it will ever fill up.
-
The display is too bright, and draws attention away from the TV. The buttons on the remote are too small, which makes it difficult to use. They are hard to identify in dim light. The manual is not very good. The quality seems pretty good, but I certainly would not have paid the RRP.
Sometimes, some of the stations are unavailable, but I am not sure about the cause of that.

Easy to set up. Good alternative to Sky Plus. It enables me to watch programmes when it suits me without ever missing anything. The time shift is a real bonus over my old dvd/hard drive recorder. It means I dont have to watch any ads. Picture quality is perfect as long as you have a reasonable digital signal. Operating instructions are very good. All written in plain English rather than the usual compendium of Euro languages. .
-
Not really the maker's fault but because of the versatility of the controls, you do need to be prepared to spend some time learning how to use all the features. You also need to remember to switch off the TV and the recorder when finished with (there is an auto sleep mode but I have never felt the need to use it).

7-day programming guide cumbersome to use. Only a small selection available on screen at once, making it difficult to have an overview of what's on all the channels at any one time. This put me off so much that I decided to get the Humax instead, which I find much easier to use, as well as being cheaper.

To replay a recording part way through, you can only fast-forward - other units allow a "scene selection" facility to help pick the bit you want.
When recordings clash, there is no warning to change channels, one recording is simply deleted.

Can record two programmes at once; EPG and other features can be improved by adding TAPs (downloadable from third parties) - product includes this feature by design, no hacking required; PVR can be connected to a PC for data transfer. Many "Toppy" enthusiasts have websites providing advice and downloadable material. Product out of the box is good but techies will enjoy it most.

Good Freeview reception. Excellent playback quality. Large storage capacity of hard-drive. Archive/backup functionality to PC via USB-connection. Twin-tuner allows recordings to be made on two channels, while watching a (limited selection) third. Very good user manual written in English by someone who understands users as much as consumer technology.
-
Poor design of remote control; small keys emulate style of illuminated RC's without actually lighting up.
Very poor response from unit via remote control. even with fresh batteries at under 6 feet range.
Some user interface controls not entirely user-friendly, i.e. no problem for teenagers but your granny would be bemused!
Auto channel switches due to start/end of recording during normal live-air viewing can be annoying and need addressing in future firmware!
Would have been nice to have USB access at front.
Starting to look expensive compared to some devices from main-stream manufacturers.
