Menu system ie in order to achieve the basic functions of displaying programmes on EPG, timer recording etc much more difficult than on comparable machine by Panasonic. Manual very complicated - it sends you to several different locations to perform one operation. Very user unfriendly. I returned it and purchased a Panasonic instead.

Good quality picture from this Sony unit, I like the Bravia Sync, the photo album and Juke box features.
-
I purchased this unit thinking it had an SD card input, one that would accept photos via my camera's SD card - it does not. I also presumed wrongly that the USB port would allow any input to be copies to the HDD - this is not true, only photo album input is allowed via the USB port.

VERY DIFFICULT TO EDIT FILMS ETC THAT I HAVE TRANSFERED IN COMPARED TO MY PREVIOUS PANASONIC,WHICH WAS A PIECE OF CAKE,GIVING VERY PRECICE AND ACCURATE EDITING.

Series Record works well
High Speed dubbing from HDD to DVD takes 5 mins for a 1 hour recording
for all its bad point still and excellent bit of kit
-
UI is much much worse than the 710 we replaced - uses much less of the screen and not as nice to look at
Can't watch anything when dubbing from DVD to HDD
EPG only displays 1hr 30min at a time (710 used to do 2hrs)
When in EPG you can't jump to a channel - you have to page through the list

After VCR, HDD is a dream and I've managed to work out some functions without referring to the manual. Couldn't really go a 10 on image simply because where I live (South coast) we're still analogue only and signals for Ch4 lousy anyway.
-
A bit slow to power up and switch off, but that's really trivial.

250GB HDD but would have preferred higher GB.
Remote Control design is excellent.
This machine has excellent features but it's a shame it doesn't support DVD-RAM disc recordings - which all my seven Panasonic machines do.
-
As stated above no support for DVD-RAM disc recording.
I would have preferred a FR (flexible record) set to exact disc time required by user rather than set the fixed
MN times defined by Sony.
In the UK most of us just use the single antenna connection, in fact most people ONLY have the single aerial downlead for both analogue & digital reception. The fact that SONY insist on having both analogue & digital aerial co-ax inputs on their dvd recorders and TV's causes unnecessary setup complications for UK residents.

Very neat in appearance. Easy to operate, and extremely simple to time programs to record whether you are in or out of your home, you can quite simply program a station to record if you are watching another, and the recorder will automatically turn itself off once your favourite program has finished, brilliant for someone like me who suffers with a disability like epilepsy, so I am very likely to forget to put the recorder on in the first instance, this way I don't have a chance to forget if I time it earlier.
Once I have seen the recording, I simply delete it from the harddrive, wonderful!
I would highly recommend this recorder to anyone, excellent buy, very slim like it's price at the time of purchase. Go for it 10 out of 10!

Superb picture quality, packed with features. Easy to use once the manual has been digested. Very responsive in operation, whisper quiet. Creates chapter points on advert breaks very accurately to allow these to be edited out on the HDD. Extremely user friendly, excellent build quality as you would expect from Sony. Fast dubbing from HDD to DVD.

Great picture on Freeview and DVD. EPG is really useful. Plenty of settings to play abput with.
-
There is fan noise which is always annoying but without having heard other similar products i can't say if it is excessive. Major niggle is that when you go to EPG you can't hear the program you were just watching. Switching from PAL to NTSC is silly because there are two options, should have been just one.

I wanted a HDD box with DVD recorder to transfer movies/shows from my Sky+ box. Initially, I had a few problems setting up so that I could view both Sky and Freeview. However, after a few hours swapping cables around, I finally figured it out. Now it does exactly what I bought it for.

No twin tuner but if you are using it as a back up to Sky, not really needed. The EPG on Freeview channels still isn't complete but the main channels are there.
