Very simple to use. The recording and review on screen menus are especially easy to use. The picture recording quality is perfect, this was the reason for paying a bit extra for Sony.
-
I should have bought the version with the bigger hard drive, as the machine is so quick and easy to use, that the hard drive fills up quickly, especially when recording in top quality mode. Previously I had never bothered recording on my old video recorder as it was too much hassle.

This is a very flexible, well thought out and easy to use product. The manual is well written and helpful. On screen menus are easy to use. Recording/managing titles on hard disk is a breeze and finalised DVDs are created with a nice front end menu for navigation. Unit writes to every type of DVD except for DVD-RAM. It even writes to dual layer disks. Smartlink to the TV is a neat feature and the remote control can be programmed to operate the TV or other equipment. This is a great product!
-
Does not have a digital tuner so think carefully about your system requirements before purchase - later Sony models may have one. Unit does not like write once DVDs formulated for PC use - can write to them but they must be 'finalised' before ejecting or else you end up with a coaster. Good quality DVDs marked for 'video data' work just fine.

Incredibly simple to use - really intuitive. 80GB hard drive is plenty, and if you want to keep anything, just burn it to a DVD.

Smartlink incompatibility with VTX8000U, recording controls on the remote are under a panel, remote control doesnt work too well unless pointed directly at the unit.

I cannot really think of any

It takes a long time to get it going. I have to unplug set top box and move the scart plug for DVD recorder into it's scart port at the at back of TV to get the picture in colour. Using SLP(6 hrs disc time) picture quality is poor. Its difficult to work out how to use it. I still think I have a lot more to get from it. At start up it takes a long time till you can use it - it flashes "loading" for ages. Not half as easy as the VCR!

Extremely difficult to set up with a TV and Freeview box, even though bothe are also Sony products. It took a very knowledgeable friend TWO AND A HALF HOURS OF SOLID WORK to get it to work and I still only vaguely understand what it can do.

The hard drive is well worth having.
On-screen menus are easy to use. This was our first DVD after a video and it is so much ebetter and easier. it was not a problem to transfer videos.
-
It takes time to set up, especially checking tuning for getting best reception stations, but worth the effort. For some reason it does nort always record from the satellite channel (Line 3) when this is set on Autoview for chosen programme.

Easy to set up and use. Menus are very user friendly and system intuitive. 80Gb is perfectly adequate for storing lots of films and other programmes to watch and delete or to dub to DVD.
-
System slow to power up. When opening DVD drawer the system will not let you do anything else until the drawer is shut again which can be a little frustrating/time-wasting but is perfectlly livable with.

The sony RDRHX510S DVDR has good editing features that makes life easier when piecing together a series of programmes recorded.
It is easy on the eye as it seems slimmer than most dvd recorders.

Can't fault this Sony as a recorder. It has been invaluable in transferring old VHS to DVD. Picture quality in the HQ recording mode on the Hard Drive is (without getting into the technicalities of resolution etc) virtually indistinguishable from the original broadcast/source quality and the recorder itself is very easy to use.
-
I wouldn't rate it as highly as a player though (which is okay as it is only used as one very occasionally). The player is very slow to respond to actions (DVD menu navigation takes forever while the player gets itself in gear) and I dont like how the onscreen display flashes onscreen displaying info like DVD PLAY and and TITLE/TRACK during Menu transitions. You should be able to turn this off, and maybe you can, but I haven't yet found out how to. This model doesn't have a Freeview decoder nor does it have a FireWire input for Mini DV input so that might be a consideration for some buyers. (Other models in Sony's range do have these features though and it would be worth searching them out as they are (so far) solid machines). Having said that, the S-Video and Composite input from my Mini DV camcorder are again, indistinguishable from the actual recordings considering there is a degree of compression going on as it gets written to the Hard Drive.

Expert reviews for Sony RDR-HX510
PC Advisor expert review - by Ben Camm-Jones
When combined hard disk and DVD recorders first appeared they struggled to convince people they represented good value for money. But with prices dropping, consumers are starting to realise that such products aren't merely aspirational. In fact, they're well within reach for your average punter.
