Sharp R86STM Freestanding, microwave

+ We have an earlier version of this microwave, still going strong after twelve years. This version looks more up to date and has some extra functions, but, like its predcessor, is simple to use and effective. It was very good value for money and had much better reviews than the brand leader.

- So far the additional settings I have tried have not used the microwave function. As a result, "quick cook" baked potatoes take longer using convection, than if I set it myself, using a combination of microwave and convection. Maybe I need to spend longer with the instruction booklet!

+ Makes the best baked potatoes, and cooks oven chips in about 10 mins. I have'nt tried everything yet. I chose Sharp and this model because it's as near the my previous Sharp microwave, which I have had for about 18 years with no problems. This model is quicker and better.

+ Versatile multi purpose cooker, gives even cooking on all systems.

- Timer alarm is very quiet, single ping, seldom heard if out of kitchen at time.
Very small printing on control panel.

- So many function "hidden" behind the buttons that it sometimes seem to take long to access them (pushing until the right one appears... and trying not to keep pushing then!)
Took me ages to set the clock, too (not used to "touch button")

+ can cook almost anything

- style looks dated. baked potatoes don't cook as well as older model and take longer.

+ Versions of this model have been going strong for many years and we wanted another reliable, versatile combination microwave. Its a good product at a reasonable price.

+ Very good family combiation microwave and has energy saving features. It heats food very fast.

- No microwave oven light but once you get used to it you won't notice.

+ cleans easily, combo cooking from frozen to cooked is ideal when set on timer to be ready when you come in from work.

- Blue LCD display not easy to see in some lighting conditions Poor finish on tray Previously I had a "Jet Convection" microwave oven and the accompanying illustrated Cookery Book with it's Cookery Notes/Recipes set out in easy to understand categories is, in my view, a much better guide.
