+ It is very simple to use, the main benefit is the all weather nature of the camera. It is amazing to be able to jump in a swimming pool and it work perfectly. For a camera of this price it is very good value for money. The quality of the pictures and video is not brillant, but it is certainly good. This would not replace you 1080P high Def video camera or digital SLR, it is a compliment to them. you can take to to places that you would not dream to take your premium equipment. You can take pictures that you would have never had chance to in the past. it is very small and quick to use. I would recommend it.

+ Leave on standby for many days, does not drain battery - then boots up very quickly.
Amazing quality, but then i'm no expert.
1 button takes pictures (even in video)
1 button starts and stops video (very very simple)
It's a web cam too. USB transfer speed is impresive

- USB connection does not cahrge battery
Battey cover needs opening for USB connection
All in all the USB/charge procedure is restrictive

+ Used on a snorkeling holiday, 3 hours per day for 2 weeks without a hitch. Full HD would of course be better, but this can just not be compared to my previous efforts with a digital still... results are fantastic.

- Screen can be a bit difficult to see underwater in bright sunlight, but you just have to adjust the screen handling. Buy a spare battery!

+ so easy to use, small and light, fits in pocket so can go with you everywhere. great pictures underwater when snorkelling

- screen sometimes relects, so hard to see what you are recording if sunlights behind you, could do with a non reflective surface, or non reflective screen protector if one is available

+ Brilliant little gem of a camera. Awesome underwater footage combined with great all round video footage in HD. Really simple to use, has a swivel screen so you can film/photo yourself and actually see what you're doing.
The photo's aren't the best quality, but in good light conditions, it's not bad at all, but then again, it is primarily an underwater video camera... and it's sturdy, durable and light. I love it, it's the best gadget I've bought in years.

- There is no lens cap, but as long as you put it back in it's bag when you're done, that's fine. Otherwise it's a perfect lil gadget.

+ I tried it under water and the view and sound is perfect. I love the camera, it's smal, light abd just cool.

- Doesn't have night view sensor or just some light. There is flash for camera, it could be used for night view, but it's not. Could be great advantage.

+ Feels good in the hand and very easy to operate. Still-photo-within-video feature is useful. Plently of choice of image format. A 16 Gig HD card holds a huge amount of data. Waterproof feature makes it useful for beach & pool-side.

- Not good in low light. Some picture modes resize the view finder image when you focus requiring you to anticipate the framing and avoid cutting off the tops & bottoms of subjects. Batteries don't have a great life and so you need two.

Score 6.0/10

+ It's wate proof ! I don't know if it is really usefull or just a gadget, but this is the main motivation for buying it
Not very expensive for a HD camera
It'small, quite easy to put in a pocket
Quite easy to use with default settings
Photo quality is acceptable

- We would expect more settings available in some cases to try to improve image quality
Image quality is really poor in dark scenes. You can set it to high sensitivity and get a lot lot of noise or keep a reasonnable sensitivity to avoid noise, but in that case all moves will be fuzzy
Even in sunlight, moving scenes, like a child on a seesaw, are fuzzy. It's like if it was missing some cpu power to encode correctly the moving scene
Very slow to start recording once you press the start recording button (maybe almost one second, which is huge when you don't want to miss what's happening). It's surprising since it is recording on a memory card. It should be faster then a tape, and it is absolutly not the case.

+ Ease of use, picture quality, value for money. This is a lovely versatile camera which can be used anywhere! I find it handy to take skiing, swimming, on the beach and to any event.

- Sometimes it struggles in dark conditions, also I would advise buying an additional battery as back-up.

+ Great point and shoot 720p video recorder - tough enough to be clipped to your rucksack/belt even when sailing/canoeing, hiking - waterproof makes it worry free. Much improved focus and low light performance over older Sanyo models, Video better than stills, both not half bad- lots of camera for the money, waterproof is a lot of fun.

- No external charging point, you need to remove the battery every time, could use a flip up view finder for underwater, the screen is not so bright that you can make out the subject in sunlight or underwater.

I've not had chance to use the waterproof-ness of the camera yet- doing that next week.
I hope to be able to take some nice shots while snorkelling. It looks great too and feels like a good quality camera- i expected a plastic feel with it being waterproof, but its great.

- Batterylife, Bought a bigger battery 1200 mAmp. 750 just doesn't cut it. sometimes problems with writing to card speedwise. Even on the fastest card around. Ergonomic wise it could be better. Finger appears in front of lens when holding it.

Camcorders Buying Guide

Manufacturer's Description

With a conventional digital camera or camcorder, many users are understandably reluctant to film or shoot in the rain or other wet environments, for the obvious fear of causing water damage to the camera. The VPC-CA9, however, has earned the highest possible IEC 60529 waterproof rating—IPX8—allowing users to capture high-definition (1280 × 720-pixel) 30 fps footage without worrying about the effects of water or snow. The VPC-CA9 is operable down to a water depth of 1.5 meters (5 feet).

With SANYO’s advanced waterproofing technology, this camera can be used without thinking twice in the rain; for marine sports such as surfing or snorkeling; or for winter sports such as skiing or snowboarding*2. The VPC-CA9 keeps up with active lifestyles, expanding the scope of shooting opportunities. It offers the enhanced functionality of 9-megapixel still images—a world-first for a waterproof HD Dual Camera. The waterproof SANYO Xacti VPC-CA9 Dual Camera is usable year-round and is perfect for activities on the go, regardless of whether users are in the city, by the sea, or in the mountains.
