The HD picture quality is fantastic - both BluRay, games and upscaled DVD from a PS3 are excellent - cannot fault the TV at all. The visual design and look of the TV is very contemporary. The connectivity is great - 3xHDMI etc.
-
The 100Hz does not do what you want it to - I have disabled this. The remote is not fully backlit. The response from the remote is poor. SD pictures are OK - not great.

Good points..Surprisingly Lightweight for 40" screen size.
Easy to set up. Picture is really quite good for LCD, and the few HDTV transmissions viewed so far are really impressive. Can't wait for this to become more commonplace.
The contrast ratio is more than enough, and so with 90% contrast setting, I am able to run the backlight at just 70%... Adequate for me even in broad daylight.
This panel was very competitively priced for its high spec..
-
The outer bezel is wider than most FPTVs of this size, particularly the verticals. Takes up more wall space than it might. There are other 40" LCD panels that are physically smaller.
I am unable to combine some basic remote commands with my STB remote controller, as I haven't been able to track down the Samsung remote codes for this model.
The lower pair of VESA 200 fastenings for attaching to wall swivel brackets do not appear to have metal nutserts, so the security of the TV is dependant on the upper two mounting screws. The lower screws self thread (Not self tap) into the plastic sockets, and care needs to be taken to avoid over tightening and stripping the plastic thread. The holding ability of the lower two screws is therefore suspect..

First off, the design of the set is awesome. The combinaton of the shiny black surround, the super clear screen, touch sensitive buttons and hidden speakers is beautiful.
Setup was very easy, pull it out of the box, plug it in and run the automatic plug and play, which you are presented with when the set is first switched, on and you're good to go. The menu system is easy to navigate and very intuitive with plenty of settings to tweek without being overwhelming.
The picture quality is superb, and with my Xbox 360 running at 1080p it looks stunning. After tweeking the picture settings, to those I found on hdtvtest.co.uk, I was also pleasantly surprised by the Freeview image quality. It is crisp and clear with no pixelation. The blacks look nice and black, colours are bright and vibrant with no noticable image blur.
I was also pleasantly surprised by the sound quality which I had heard others say wasn't so good. It's certainly not going to match a surround sound setup but having spent 5 minutes fiddling with the 5 band equalizer I have mine setup to be perfectly adequate. So much so that I've abandoned my plan to run the sound through my hi-fi.
Final plus point is the number of connections, which include 3 HDMI, 2 SCART, 1 Component (Y/Pb/Pr), 1 Composite (RCA video and audio), 1 VGA, 1 S-Video, 1 Analogue Analogue Audio Output, 1 Optical Digital Audio Output, 1 Headphone Output and a USB 2 port.
You'd be very hard pressed to find an equivalent TV for the same money. Highly recommended!
-
My only gripe about image quality are the faint horizontal lines strobing down the screen while using my Xbox 360. They do not appear while watching Freeview and are only noticeable on the Xbox when it's displaying a static uniform colour image like a game loading screen. This was the only reason I did not score it 10/10 and may just be an issue with my set but I've yet to contact customer support to find out.
The problem I have is the response time of the freeview EPG. It's apalling. The usual response time is around half a second which is slow enough, but can sometimes take as much as two or three seconds to respond.
The reception of the remote control IR could also be better. I'm used to just pointing the remote in the general direction of the device but the F86 requires you to point the remote straight at the TV. This may only be a minor issue but can be frustrating when combined with the slow response time.

Absolutely STUNNING picture (sound is routed though an amp so don't use the TV's speakers) - the SEXIEST way to turn on a TV ever! (sounds weird but if you do it you'll know!)
-
menus are slow - I'd heard a few folk mention this before I bought it anf thought "huh?" but if you're tatrting about with any of the settings whilst watching something you can't just quickly dink in and do it, they ARE sluggish to respond. There are an UNBELIEVABLE amount of settings available (3 basic picture setiings, which can be set differently for each input and THEN tweaked indefinitely within each setting) but I have stuck to the off-the-peg and they are fine by me.
None of the bad points would stand in the way of me recommending this TV though - it is fantastic.

The only thing that is disappointing to me is the warranty which is only twelve months. I would have thought a three year warranty would have been normal these days with this type of product. Does this indicate a lack of faith in the product by Samsung? I hope not.

does not switch off, you have to switch off at mains. would be nice if would accept analogue signal aswell as digit. will not recognise a more uptodate usb stick typically will read 2gb but not 4gb. The colour of the edges where the speakers are should be black. The samsung name at the bottom should be in a dark colour. if it could clean itself !!!! Most small flatscreen TVs have LCD screens. Some larger TVs have plasma screens. Some very new TVs have LED screens. Traditional TVs are called Standard or CRT.
|
HD TV

|
Full HD 1080p
|
‘HD Ready’ is a Europe-wide standard designed to made HD technology less confusing. HD Ready TVs must have
• Minimum vertical resolution of 750 pixels (in widescreen format)
• Ability to display 720p and 1080i formats
• An HDMI or Digital Video Interface (DVI interface)
Full HD is a higher standard. Full HD TVs have screen resolutions of 1080p and can output at least 24 frames per second.
Full HD is becoming common, but you won’t see Full HD on normal TV channels for a long time, so it remains optional for many people.
|

|
Number of Scart Interfaces

|
2
|
|
Scart sockets are places where you can connect other devices to your TV. If you already have a DVD player, a VCR and a Playstation you might want to make sure your new TV has enough Scart interfaces so you don’t have to keep crawling round the back of the TV.
|
Frequency (Hz)

|
100
|
|
A TV’s frequency is how often the picture is updated per second, and is measured in Hertz (Hz). A higher frequency, such as 100 Hz, means that a TV is more likely to show fast-moving images with high detail.
|
Contrast Ratio (X:1)

|
25000
|
|
This figure is designed to tell you how much difference there is between dark and light colours on the TV. It is quoted as a ratio, between the brightest white and the darkest black. 500:1 means the brightest white is 500 times more bright than the darkest black. Plasma screens have historically boasted better contrast ratios than LCD screens.
|
Screen Resolution (pixels)

|
1080p
|

The number of pixels the screen has. The more you have, the more detail the screen can display, given a high quality source.
