Does almost everything extremely well. The 7x zoom makes getting a photo easy and the quick startup and picture taking along with image stabilization mean that you you can get a good shots of small children (I have three) which my old digital camera missed or blurred.

Small and feels solid. On slow, zoom reasonably controlable. Zoom is V.good for a camera this size.
-
Battery doesn't last long, especially below 10 deg' c.
Tripod should be sold with a washer for this camera, screwing tight it distorts the battery/memory card access lid
& can shut the camera down. May even break lid & loose card/battery.
Not easy to see viewfinder in strong sunlight.

Its difficult to fault the Ricoh R7 and have had no problems with the camera to date. The lens and image quality is excellent especially with Macro shots, which was the reason I purchased the camera in the first place. The camera comes with all the modern feature you would expect, anti-shake, impressive optical zoom, face detection and a range of scene modes all of which are pretty easy to get to grips with. Compact and stylish I can also take it anywhere in my pocket!

Excellent lens, wide angle so getting everything in is easy and a great zoom all in a small camera. Start up time is also quick with the other plus being battery life, we easily get 300 photos per battery charge. Screen is easily visible even in bright daylight.
-
Image stabilization is not the best and the camera does suffer in low light. The camera does have a focus assist illumination light that ensures that camera focuses in low light conditions but the photos can still be disappointing. Some of the functions, such as switching between movie mode and photo mode, seemed awkward at first until you set up the personal settings, this can then become a single button press.

Cheaper and smaller than Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ3. Good wide angle lenses. Nice zoom. A lot of features as for this kind of ultra compact camera. You can take it everywhere as it fits into pocket. Far better than other competitors in this price range. Good value for good price.
-
A bit to saturated colours but this is standard in non professional cameras (all new ultra and compact cameras). It is OK but sometimes colours look better than in the reality. For me a minus, for other people it can be a plus.

Good quality lense wide angle to telephoto - Results under most conditions are excellent - colour accuracy and lense definition result in high quality images(using 64 ISO setting) requiring little or no manipulation on the pc. Close up facility is very useful as is the setting for copying text and documents - ideal if you don't have a scanner. Good battery life - quick start up. Compact size easily sits in shirt pocket - can take it anywhere. Anti Shake feature effective.
-
Autofocus very occasionally struggles to find a focus point. Flash is not very powerful - need to raise ISO setting for subject distances exceeding 3 metres but camera takes good "available light" images if placed on a firm support or tripod.

Very fast start up, and the automatic settings for a "point and press" option work very well for most situations. Has the "soft flash" option too so you don't get that "bright" centre point that you can get on some flashes. The close in macro is very impressive aswell as the very good 7.1 optical zoom.
-
The lens cover is a little flimsy and opens very easily, and so it is easy for objects to get at the lens itself. The battery and card door can pop open a bit too easily for my liking too. Would prefer a stiffer catch on the door mechanism.

Unbelievably good outdoors photos in almost any scenario with almost any setting. The lense and the zoom are fantastic, and its so simple to use even my kids can take snaps. Its was really a close call between this and the Panasonic Lumix TZ3. If you can buy one for the R7 money then it would even closer, but until then this must be the best compact digital camera for the money.

Expert reviews for Ricoh Caplio R7
TechRadar expert review
This is not the time to be shy about your achievements - if you're any good at anything, make a noise about it. Take the Ricoh Caplio R7, a fine looking and well-built little camera that announces itself with possibly the loudest start-up noise of any compact. Press the On button to make the lens pop out and you'd swear there was an angry wasp trapped in there somewhere. Ricoh has been making quite a bit of noise lately. The usually low-key manufacturer has just released the upmarket Caplio GX100 (reviewed in the October issue) and now we have the latest in its R series. It was only in…

Camera Type

|
Compact
|
|
There are 2 main types of camera: The SLR and the Compact.
SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex. SLR cameras use a prism to reflect the exact image as seen through the lens and so offers a more accurate viewfinder. SLR cameras have detachable lenses offering greater flexibility if you wish to take a variety of different photographs.
Compact cameras have a built in lens and an ‘above lens’ viewfinder which is less accurate but they are often cheaper, more sleekly designed and easier to carry anywhere with you to capture that moment perfectly without having to fiddle with complex settings or a bag full of lenses.

|
Image Stabilisation

|
Yes
|
If a photo is taken at a slow shutter speed, or at a long focal length, the effects of ‘hand shake’ will be amplified. Some cameras come with built-in image stabilisation which is designed to act against this to produce sharper images.
It’s great for low light shots without a tripod, like at a gig.

Memory card slots come in many formats:

|
Manual Focus

Having a timer function is essential if you want to get into the shot yourself. Make sure your camera has this feature if you plan to go on holiday and capture photos of you and your friends or family having fun together.

An under water feature means your camera is safe to dive with, usually between 3 and 5 metres. Most dSLR cameras will require expensive separate housing so consider investing in a waterproof digital compact first.
