+ Good editing programme. Difficulty in installing software perhaps conflict with other programme. Now on laptop instead as I could not solve it.

- slide holder seems flimsy. The Silverfast video tutorial is in strong German accent- difficult to follow.

Excellent at darker colours, and sunsets

- Software is I think poor and prone to some irritating crashes, for example if you choose to save over an existing file, this will crash the system and require a full restart Instructions for how to use it definitely poor. Don't expect to simply install it and use it if you want high qualiy results. I only used this product with Fuji Film negatives, but would say that some colours were very hard to represent well. I was scanning in holiday photos from Sri Lanka and the Maldives, and found the bright blues of the sea impossible to get good results for. Overcast Skies also had a brown tinge to them, particularly towards the boundaries of the picture, so to be fair this may indicate some poor lens performance, as I only used a standard kit lens with a Canon SLR. That said, none of my photos display these characteristics in the prints from Kodak. Finally expect to spend a lot of time touching up imperfections. On average 20-30 minutes per photo, dependent how fussy you are.

- I do have a problem with the scanner which I am first trying to follow up with the manufacturer. After about an hour's use the colour balance of thre scanned image diverges deteriorates and diverges from the pre-scan settings. This may be a hardware problem.

+ Good value for money and competent at the price.

- It struggled with accurately representing some slides. Once I'd compared it to a Nikon Coolscan I realised it wasn't in the same league! It's not a bad product by any means - for the money I think it's fine, it's just that the scans weren't good enough for my (semi-professional) needs.

Not used enough to comment on quality, seems okay.

+ Very effective unit - does what it says on the box! Easy to setup and use, I just need several months off to input the enormous stack of slides that I need to scan! Light box on the top for a quick view is a very good idea. Padded carry/storage case is also a good point - you don't always want it on the desk taking up space.

- None really, its a shame that the slide carrier is not more automated so you could leave it running through a few at a time, although if I'd wanted to spend more money there probably is one out there!

- The software package as i found, took some updates to my machine before it would load . Allso Quickscan works ok, but intellescan as i find leaves the
software companies name diagonally accross the picture that i cannot remove.
Two sets of disks are suplied, with no instructions of wich set to use,a serial number is on the pre update disks that does not work.
Have tried to contact silverfast by e-mail and letter to no avail.
For the moment i am useing quickscan only.

+ The quality, once you have learned how to navigate the scanning options which aren;t easy, is very good, although it tends to darken the picture

- Loading the slides is VERY slow. It come with a 4 slide cannister and i had wrongly assumed that you could put 4 slides in and leave it to it. The cannister has to be moved along by hand, then a button to 'prescan' and then enter file names and alter any settings befroe it finally scans. Per sldie i recon about 3 minutes, which must of it you have to sit there. With about 2000 slides to scan i wish i had spent a bit more money to automate it, or in hindsight a better option would have been to send them off to a compnay with the really good kit.

+ When it works, it works well. The dust/scratch correction and image adjustment features are very useful. It seems to be the only relatively sophisticated purpose-built 35mm slide scanner on the market.

- First one I received was faulty. On the second, one software disc was blank, leading to problems which have not yet been fully resolved. There seems to be no support from Plustek. The Silverfast image management software is German and although there is copious video help in English this is not very focussed on specific problems - no FAQ-type feature I can find. A good written manual would be more use than the electronic literature provided. The Silverfast e-mail help line in Germany (but English used)is very slow but eventually polite and thorough.
