Score 9.0/10

Matt, Swindon

+ Image quality is outstanding with great colour and depth to the picture
Sound quality is good through HDMI but outstanding through analogue out
To up scaling of Standard Definition DVD’s is impressive as is the sound quality from CD’s
The 2 x HDMI outs are useful if required
The Ethernet connection can be used for downloading updates over the internet and soon (when updated is available at the end of March 2009) used for Bonus 2.0 discs
This blu-ray player is an outstanding all-rounder.

- The cost is expensive, however you do get what you pay for.

+ Brilliant Picture & Sound

- Slow start up time, is probably the only fault I can come up with, but that is being picky.

Jim, Barnes, London

+ Loads of functionality, great picture and sound.

- Integration - using Kuro Link features (PQLS and other HDMI control functions) forces functions on other Pioneer components (AV Receiver and plasma panel) to be disabled and operation of integrated system becomes more complex. Example: Sky+ HD box outputs stereo (not 5.1) over HDMI; 5.1 sound is output via optical link. Functionality to associate optical link (carrying 5.1 sound) with HDMI carrying video to TV/SAT button on Receiver is disabled if Kuro link / HDMI control is used. Fix is to connect HDMI to plasma and optical link to AV Receiver and have synchronised amp and video switching. Loading discs is slow.

DVD players and Digital Video Recorders (DVD/HDD recorders) Buying Guide

Manufacturer's Description

The Reference in Blu-ray Disc Players.

The BDP-LX91 offers you pure moving pictures and living sound precisely as the director intended. This BD player guarantees impeccable quality, not just for Blu-ray Discs, but also for CD and DVD content. Moreover it features BD-Live, which means you can upgrade your player via the BD-Live connection.

Constructed out of solid aluminium, with dedicated audio and video boards and gold-plated terminals, the BDP-LX91 is the cinephile’s Blu-ray disc player.

To take full advantage of the extra features available on future Blu-ray Discs, the BDP-LX91 features BD-Live*, which will further enhance and personalise your entertainment experience. The player is equipped with an Ethernet port that allows you to connect to the Internet to download data such as subtitles, images and bonus trailers, join in live chat sessions, online gaming and video messaging when viewing BD-Live compatible titles.

The films you watch now become more real than ever. The BDP-LX91 supports not only 48-bit HDMI Deep Colour, for an unprecedented range of colour tones and exceptionally smooth transitions, but also x.v.Colour. The result is that you see greens, reds and blues far deeper than previously possible.

The soundtrack is true to the original, too. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bring studio-class sound to your home. Professional-grade Wolfson Digital Audio Converters guarantee additional exceptional audio performance.

With a compatible Pioneer AV Receiver, the BDP-LX91 can also deliver truly outstanding and precise music CD playback via HDMI, using the specially developed Precision Quartz Lock System (PQLS).

The BDP-LX91 features an optimised Graphical User Interface (GUI) for exceptionally straightforward operation, and supports the connectivity feature KURO LINK, so the remote of your KURO flat screen TV is all you need to control the main functions of the Blu-ray Disc player.

  • This player is BD-Live Ready and will require a firmware update to support all features of BD-Live. Once the firmware becomes available, we’ll publish it online. You will be able to find it under the ‘Support & Media’ tab of this product page.
