Garry, Bedford , “Researched before I bought!”

+ Total quality in terms of picture. Just the basic integrated digital appears HD. On the other hand, HD channels are out of this world. I use Sky HD, and with this TV is worth every penny. The TV is easy to set up, and Panasonic have finally included a base, for the TV to sit on, instead of having to pay for the pedastal as well. If it's quality of picture - then this TV is for you

- No real bad points. Sound is not superb, depite having built in 3D, although better than previous Panasonic models.

+ The image quality is simply superb. The DVB tuner makes the pictures look so real that you think the pictures are going to jump out the screen at you.

- The sound quality was ok, but nothing special and the design with the bowed bit at the bottom looks a bit ugly and out of place. The biggest problem for me was that my TV seemed to suffer from an unbelievably loud buzzing noise that came from the back and was clearly audible from 8 feet away during normal or quiet dialogue scenes. This seems to be a very very common issue with these TVs if you look at other AV forums and your retailer may not accept that this is a fault - so be careful. Personally I thought that this was a lot of money for a TV that buzzed like a demented bumble bee!

+ slim design good placement of speakers the picture quality on standard defination and is excellent on 1080p high definition the screen is not so reflective as previous models which means you see more of the picture instead of reflections of lights etc in the room there is no judder in the picture when playing back full hd films the black piano key gloss frame is stylish overall this tv is outstanding and is the best picture quality I have seen.

- sound distortion if bass is turned up to high no blanking plugs for the pedestal mounting holes if mounting the tv on the wall.

+ With HD input, this TV is imperious.
Most LCD's only resolove to 1024 or 2048 shades for each colour, this Panasonic resolves to over 5000.
This lack of colour resolution on LCD's makes pictures look cartoon like compared to this Panasonic, even my 5* 32" Panasonic LCD. It is no coincidence that shops use animation DVD's to show LCD's off to their best they can't touch this panel for reproducing lifelike images.
This is also Panasonics first 100hz Plasma. On standard definition broadcast TV (50hz) this can be amazing much better than the previous 50hz Panasonic plasmas, upgrading picture quality to something close to HD. I bought a 42" becuase I thought SD would look too poor on anything larger, this screen is so good I regret not getting the 46"

- Alas there is a single flaw watching football on SD broadcast. Upscaling an SD picture involves taking a frame, approximatley doubling the number of lines, doubling the number of columns, then creating an additional frame to be broadcast between this frame and the next. Most of what you see has been 'created, by the digital processor. The processor is occasionally fooled. A cross from the corner, with a bit of spin on the ball and the processor has top work out where the ball will be in the next 'created' frame, but the outline of the ball appears to move at a different speed to the pattern on the ball becuase of the spin, confused, the processor ends up breaking the ball up into peices that oscillate accross the screen. You might see it happen a dozen times in a match, but it is so out of kilter with what is otherwise a stunning picture it takes a lot of getting used to. I have only seen it happen once in a movie in 3 months, not a problem at all, but if you are a football fan and you don't have SKY HD, you might want to wait for the next release of this TV see if they have fixed the problem.

+ I liked the fact I didn't have to do anything regarding brightness contrast etc. plus the colour depth is great. For such small speakers the sound is great, I speak as an ex professional recording studio engineer and manager. Although I already had a freeview box the internal freeview receiver is more sensitive and picks up more channels. I have been a broadcast TV editor for many years and have recommended this TV to a few people now.

+ Great HD contrast, sharp resolution on high motion sports (the grass in football does not blur as with most screens when the cameras pan quickly).

+ Stunning HD quality. SD quality is pretty good also - I think better than the reviews that I had read.. Colours are much more natural than I thought, but super vibrant when the signal contains them (Simpsons etc.)

- I am unable to tell the difference with the 'Intelligent Frame Creation turned on or off. Same with the Picture Noise Reduction. Maybe I have paid for these features for nothing. The sound is pretty good for a TV these days, but needs an AV receiver of course, to do the listening experience justice.

+ the tv has awesome HD picture quality and still retains a high quality SD picture. Sound quality is good and the 3d surround option works well in my room anyway. Aesthetically pleasing with ultra modern looks. Also have ps3 and pc hooked up which both provide stunning picture quality. Many other outputs which will use in future too.

- Sound bass fails at a reasonable volume but this is to be expected from all flat panel tv's.

Krzysztof , Watford , “First time plasma user”

+ Lots of connectivity options, great size, quick start-time and quick channel switching, good tuner (including FreeView). Amazing image quality when used with HD content. When connected to the computer the experience is simply great... 42 inch desktop with vibrant colours and no flicker makes perfect sense for anyone who values the size!

- 1. Built in SD card reader is a nice feature but I would rather have general USB instead - I think other Panasonic model has got that feature - but I am not really bothered by that.
2. Another bad point is the phosphor blur that is pretty much visible on anything that moves fast but that is pretty much normal for most of the plasmas from what I have read online (haven't tested myself though). Also for this model the blur is supposed to be quite minimum so I imagine it is much worse on other (older) models.
3. As for any HDTV of that size - think twice before you buy it - When you blow up the normal SD signal across 42 inches it is univetable that the image will be horribly blurred. If you plan on watching a lot of non-HD content - consider smaller TV or switching to HD if possible. For some channels, even the advanced electronics of this TV cannot make up for limited quality of signal - so you might end up wathing TV that will be horribly blurred. Then again when you watch HD content - the quality is simply jaw-dropping.

+ Side mounted HDMI socket means it's easy to have flat to the wall
The mains inlet points down not back, which again means it's easier to mount flush to the wall
Amazing deep blacks
Great for fast moving movie scenes
1080i performance is great
1080P stuff looks amazing if you turn off overscanning

- First unit we received had a faulty clicking fan; the replacement is perfect
The 100Hz frame interpolation makes everything look a bit artificial and has horrible artefacts for sports so better turned off
Upscaling and deinterlacing of SD material within the TV not as good as my Onkyo TR606 amplifier, but since I use that all the time, the picture is fantastic as it upscales to 1080i in the amp

TV Buyers Guide

Manufacturer's Description

Premium Full-HD Models with Superb Motion Image Quality and Advanced Networking Capabilities (HDMIx3, SD card slot)

Intelligent Frame Creation achieves excellent moving picture resolution and flicker-less images. With 50Hz video signal input, the Intelligent Frame Creation achieves high moving picture resolution even in fast-motion scenes. This function makes new frame that was calculated by speed and direction of motion. It allows natural frame-to-frame transitions to occur for smooth motion images with high resolution.

Every image is richly expressive from bright scenes, such as scorching desert landscapes, to dark cave scenes. Contrast is enhanced by the new Real Black Drive system (a pre-discharge control system) and a higher base luminance from improvements made during panel production process. The high contrast creates deep, robust blacks and reproduces scenes with a delicate balance of light and shadow.

5,120 Equivalent Steps of Gradation lends natural expression to images such as sunsets. VIERA’s large colour space covers 110% of the HDTV colour standard. This wide gamut has been achieved by an advanced panel structure and a newly developed filter, which produce richer, more vivid colouring.

In addition to brilliant picture quality, VIERA models offer the easy operation made possible by VIERA Link and the SD card slot. VIERA Link lets you operate other connected Panasonic AV components using only the VIERA TV’s remote control unit. The majority of the VIERA line-up is equipped with a slot for large-capacity SDHC cards. You can view a slideshow of your photos on VIERA’s big beautiful screen just by simply remove the SD memory card from your digital still camera, and slip it in to the slot.
