+ Very good image quality on both video and still.
Easy to use manual focus setting, good for low light or shooting over water where the auto focus may not work properly.
Good image stabiliser.
One of the few HD video cameras with a viewfinder, good for shooting in strong sunlight where the LCD monitor image can be difficult to see.

- Should have come with an HDMI mini cable. I had to buy one before I could use the camera with my TV to get full HD picture quality.

+ A Camcorder which gives near professional results in both video and still images. A very useful tool for the Pro-amateur or a handy small video unit for the professional film maker.

- May seem expensive but if you are after top quality results the price is worth paying. In practical terms you would need to purchase the larger battery pack.

+ Very easy to get started using the features right away. Video quality is outstanding, very easy to use with a HD TV, or a PC.

- Wish it had come with a case.

+ pleasantly surprised with image quality once I'd seen it on TV, coz you can't see squat on the lcd screen really.

- Takes too long to power up when starting, or opening screen. For candid, improv stuff it makes it very frustrating. You can't leave it on or the battery will die quickly, but it'll shut off automatically just when you need it.
Very shaky too. Need tripod on all but wide lens.

+ Picture and Sound quality is 2nd to non. The weight of the camera is excellent and having a view finder makes it better to use in bright light.

- No neck cord provided as a safety feature. Battery life is not very good at all with the supplied battery giving just one hour on a full charge. Panasonic should have incorporated a spare battery with the camera, to purchase an additional battery that is Panasonic costs over £120.00 which seems alot of money.

+ has a kind of built in instruction manual.
Intelligent Assist mode works very well

- Battery life is only one hour. Spares cost a fortune
They have made it difficult to use unbranded batteries by chipping theirs.
To use the longest life battery you have to buy an adapter for a fortune too. In low light blacks are extremely grainy

Camcorders Buying Guide

Manufacturer's Description

120GB Full HD SD/HDD Hybrid Camcorder with 3MOS Sensor System and Manual Operation

The HDC-HS300 is a hybrid camcorder that records Full HD images either on an SD (or SDHC) Memory Card or the built-in 120GB hard disk drive. A 32-GB SDHC Memory Card can hold around 12 hours of recorded video clips (in HE mode). The HDC-HS300 camcorder can copy recorded video images from the SD Memory Card to the hard disk, or vice versa, with easy operation.

The HDC-HS300 camcorder features the Full HD 3MOS sensor, developed by Panasonic based on its proven 3CCD technology. The Panasonic 3MOS sensor system captures more vibrant, true-to-life colours, greater detail and richer gradation.

The iA function automatically activates several convenient shooting functions. These include Advanced O.I.S., which compensates for hand-shake to eliminate blurring; Face Detection, which adjusts the exposure so faces are captured perfectly; and Intelligent Contrast Control, which helps ensure proper contrast. Also included is the Intelligent Scene Selector, which determines the shooting conditions and automatically selects the scene setting that will provide optimal results.

The Manual Ring is provided for users who want more creative freedom in their image production. with the HDC-HS300 camcorder users can enjoy precise, responsive fingertip control over five key settings — zoom, focus, iris, shutter speed, and white balance.

Image sensor size has been increased from previous 1/6 inch to 1/4.1 inch. 3MOS system with 3 full-HD sensors has total pixel count of 9,150,000 pixels* (3,050,000-pixel x 3). While higher pixel count tends to make noise more noticeable when shooting under dim light conditions, HDC-HS300 solves this problem by using 3 high-sensitivity MOS sensors. It records beautiful images even under dim lighting while maintaining high pixel count, thus making it possible to shoot under minimum luminance of 1.6 lx. * Effective motion image pixels: 6,210,000
