+ Amazing zoom!
Burst Mode is brilliant too....great for action shots.
Size is good - fits into your handbag but bit big for the pocket.
If you like amazing quality photo's and go to events where getting in close is really important then this is definately the camera for you! I have picture's of motorsport and boats and the zoom is exactly what I needed to get in really close and have some brilliant pictures to show for it.

- One bad point is that when you are shooting a motion picture and you are in the sun, occasionally you get sun lines running down the picture and this does not go away when you transfer to a computer. Apart from that the blurring of the motion picture when you move the camera due to the auto-zoom is slightly frustrating but move slowly and it doesnt happen - if anyone knows how to turn it off - great! . So I would say that if you are more of a movie-mode person then this is not the camera for you.

+ Very simple buttons and usability.
Great features. Wide angle to telephoto lens, big view finder, able to take large HD videos which is unusal. More so to be able to zoom in whilst filming.

- Not able to take tiff/RAW/uncompressed files.
Not so many manual options if required.
When using the zoom on video, camera takes a while to re-focus. The end result is that there is a lot of out-of-focus time if a lot is going on in the video.

+ Panasonic Lumix TZ5 - Very easy to pick up and use with the 'IA' Intelligent Auto function i.e. it picks the best settings for each picture. Sometimes this isn't 100% correct but in the main it makes some good decisions and normally the picture is fantastic. The only issues i've come across so far it taking pictures of shows on holiday in a mix of dim/bright light and at a distance inexcess of 20m. This has been very hit and miss i.e. either picture too dark or slighty blurred. All of the daytime pictures though have been crystal clear no matter what the subject is or how fast it is moving. For those who like to set individual settings i.e. aperture times etc. will be disappointed as the these are selected depending on the setting, however, there are lots of great settings like firework, candlelight, portrait, sport and so on. About 25 different functions from memory. The othe major plus point about the TZ5 is the lens. Very high quality, with a fantastic 10x zoom and a wide angle for landscape. The camera also has the facility to take movie images for a maximum of 15mins per movie. Maybe not such an unusual facility you may think, however, the image is in HD (high definition) and stereo sound. My previous cameras have only be SD (standard definition) and mono previously. Finally, camera comes with it's own rechargeable battery and charger. This holds it's charge well and lasts a good couple of days even with heavy usage i.e. lots of pictures requiring a flash.

- Panasonic Lumix TZ5 - As above, the only bad point I have found is trying to take a long distance photo of dim/light subjects such as a show on stage. Note if you want to connect the camera to a HD TV a separate cable has to be purchased.

+ Having had experience of a number of digitals this year including Canon Ixus 970iS and Lumix TZ3, there is little to compare with the TZ5. It is simply extraordinarily good, all functions considered carefully and results beyond reproach. It is the only camera which daily comes out with me, safe in the knowledge that I shall get the results I desire. Not quite as pocketable as the Canon but you can't have everything. One day I will and until then TZ3 is my winner.

+ I love this camera! The zoom is just simply amazing, it has a reasonably quick start up time, great battery life, and the large auto LCD is great - it brightens up automatically if needed, intelligent auto is brilliant, plus there are lots of other great features. One of my fav's is a low-pixel 'clipboard' setting for taking quick information/reference pics of maps etc, which are stored in the camera memory and then you view them when you need them in clipboard playback, they don't show up in regular picture playback so your lovely holiday photos aren't interrupted. I used this to take pics of maps for holiday, and the camera's manual, so I didn't have to carry booklets & maps around but could simply turn the camera on and look at the information, and zoom into it too!

- You can't get a docking/charging station for it (which is a hassle when you have been used to one and now have to dig out the cables & charger out of a drawer, fuss around connecting the camera to the computer, or remove the battery and find somewhere to plug the charger in then remember to put the battery back in before you go out). The camera is a tad heavier than some compacts and you do notice the weight, but considering the incredible features it packs I'd say it was a trade worth making!

+ As a point-and-shoot camera the TZ-5 is an excellent choice. With it's large high resolution screen and fine ergonomics it is a pleasure to use. Image quality is very good and the "Intelligent Auto" mode appears to work very effectively. I would have no hesitation in recommending this item to someone who wants a high quality camera that does everything for them.

- Not "bad" points exactly, but worth taking into consideration... There is very little scope for "manual" intervention - this is effectively an auto-only camera. Also, it is not the most compact camera you can buy though given the range of the lens and size of the screen it's about as small as one could reasonably expect.

+ Lots of features, pretty easy to get to grips with from the start, especially if you've been using digital cameras for a while already. If this is your first camera I suppose the amount of features could be a bit daunting, but that could be said about any camera in this price bracket.
The 10x zoom combined with Image Stabiliser is a great feature. One of the few, if not the only, compact camera with a 10x zoom.

- Image quality can be a bit "iffy". Even at the lowest ISO setting, and this features in many reviews by the camera websites/magazines, the image in low light can be a bit grainy. This is a bit disappointing, as it only gets worse the more the ISO is bumped up to compensate for low light. Then if you limit yourself to only using ISO 100 to 400, you can still get good shots but again the graininess may show if you're printing larger prints.

+ 10X zoom is outstanding, you don't find this on many compacts so definitely the best feature. The camera is intelligent and when on automatic settings focuses really well and is able to recognise faces. The huge screen on the back is excellent, very clear to see and you don't get the feeling that it is fragile (this was the case on my previous camera). The picture quality is very good, I am delighted so far with the photos I have taken.

- I read about this myself in other reviews, and it is true to say that the lens cover is wafer thin. This has not presented me with a problem yet, but it is a worry.

zoom is the best it even zooms in to the tinest things with out loosing the detail.

+ Easy to use. If you want simple & effective it's ideal, plus there's loads of features for those who like to complicate matters & have a little control. It looks good, feels good & does the job.

- Obviously it's not cheap & a good memory card has to be purchased as an extra. The User's Manual is not as easy to use as the camera. The battery life seems short & needs recharging regularly plus a spare one is also not cheap nor readily available.

+ Great features with the wide angle lens and 10 x zoom. light and easy to use. can view pics on your HDTV

- None really for the money it's brilliant. Takes a while to get to know the best shutter speed to get best light and resolution but worth playing with and you would have the same on any camera and at least with a digital you can view the result and try it again while you are still there...

+ Really easy to use really good pictures

- Slightly large, this is because of the large lens but a bit too big for trouser pockets! The lead to connect to a pc is a proprietary connection on the camera not just a standard small usb, thi means you will have to be careful not to lose the lead!

+ Intelligent features make the camera very easy to use in point and shoot mode. Compact and a lot easier to carry around than a DSLR.

- Image quality is ok but there is a compromise to be made when buying a camera like this vs even a low end DSLR. Indoor shots with flash have been a little disappointing.

Manufacturer's Description

As seen on TV! The 28mm Wide Angle & 10x Optical Zoom Intelligent Compact Camera, Perfect for Traveling.

Panasonic is pleased to introduce Lumix digital camera, 9.1-megapixel DMC-TZ5, featuring a 28mm wide-angle 10x optical zoom Leica DC lens (equivalent to 28-280mm on a 35mm film camera). The 28mm wide angle lens captures the subject and the scene wider at the same standpoint than normal 35mm camera does and you can zoom in or out to magnify a distant subject when desired with the 10x optical zoom.

The Intelligent Auto mode, which comprises various shooting-assist functions, has been advanced for the DMC-TZ5 by newly adding the Intelligent Exposure feature and Digital Red-eye. The high-performance image-processing LSI has newly entered its fourth generation, to be reborn as Venus Engine IV to assure higher-quality pictures with an advanced signal processing system.

The DMC-TZ5 is renowned for packaging a remarkable 28mm wide angle 10x optical zoom lens in a compact body. Notably, the DMC-TZ5 newly integrates the capability of recording 720pHD (high-definition) motion pictures together with its direct output function allowing users to enjoy watching both still and motion pictures in impressive HD quality on a large-screen HDTV via an optional component cable.

The DMC-TZ5 boasts Intelligent LCD function, which detects the lighting condition and controls the brightness level of the LCD in 11 fine steps, to offer a display with most appropriate clarity in any situations with newly developed 460,000-dot high resolution in 3.0-inch. Black Model: DMC-TZ5EB-K, Silver Model: DMC-TZ5EB-S.
