This is my first smartphone and touchscreen phone. I had weighed up the iPhone vs N97 and decided to go with Nokia as I have always had Nokia in the past and have always been impressed. The touchscreen is great (took a little getting used to) and the ability to get e-mail, web, music and video all in one little device is amazing! I am please Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync is functional on this phone as that is the system we use at work for e-mail and calendar syncing. Also impressed with the music player, GPS, video. And since this is a phone afterall, let's not forget the voice side of it. I have great signal reception almost everywhere (including in some well insulated buildings) and the voice clarity and touch sensitive screen are great.
-
The downside of this phone is the same complaint with any new phone ... there are bugs still to be worked out and I would recommend people wait until the first revision of this model. There has already been one software update (although I have not noticed much improvement myself). The list of failings below will, I suspect, all be sorted out in the next release of this phone as they are simple fixes.
1. Only able to have ONE Exchange ActiveSync account on the phone at a time. Bad planning, considering most businesses use this system AND Gmail (a very popular personal e-mail provider) now also allows this form of access.
2. Syncing contacts between multiple sources while also using Exchange ActiveSync was a nightmare because every system had its own field codes and I lost several important notes I kept with some of my contacts.
3. Choosing between Contract Internet, Contract WAP and Wireless is MOST frustrating. Part of my frustration with web access on the phone might just be Vodafone and not specific to the N97, but I am forever having to force the switch between these sources of internet to get my phone to access the web. And getting BBC iPlayer to actually play when not using wireless internet access is almost nil!
4. The accelerometer (screen orientation sensing) is pathetic and the screen layout totally screws up every time I turn my phone around (unless I am using the keyboard, and then the screen layout is perfect).
5. Since this is a new phone release, the most important accessory for any touchscreen - the peel on/off screen protector - should have been the first thing Nokia makes available ... but NO. Only generic touchscreen protectors are available from Nokia and third parties and since the face of this phone is unique with buttons, camera and sensor eyes, this is a disappointing oversight on Nokia's part.
6. Not being able to lock the camera slide cover is annoying.

Well featured, stylish phone with a large screen and full qwerty keyboard. Well implemented web browser and generally highly intuititve interface. Build quality seems high all-around, and using the N97 is a most enjoyable experience. I would definately recommend this phone.
-
Even after several weeks, I still find the lower right section of the keyboard (space, symbol key, etc) difficult - i tend to press these at once, repeatedly. Some more tactile feedback from the keyboard would be most welcome. Scroll bars can be slightly cumbersome - I repeatedly find myself wishing I could use the volume rocker to scroll. Camera key means that care is needed when placing in an in-car holder - if this key is pressed, the camera application opens, even when the primary lens cover is closed. Speaking of the lens cover - I much preferred the mechanism on the N95, and repeatedly put my thumb on the lens when opening the camera cover.
The method for answering the phone while locked took some getting used to, not helped by sometimes strange behaviour of the unlock key seemingly needing pressed twice - though this has improved (but not gone away entirely?) in the V11 firmware update.

The phone looks great and the slide mechanism is solid and feels nicer everytime you open it. The touch screen is responsive and accurate. The camera is easy to use and integrates really well with networking app facebook, which comes pre-loaded. The slide out keypad was the main reason I went for this over the iphone and makes texting, emailing and web browsing so much easier. There are lots of little things that add to the phones charm and innovation, such as a swipe to answer function when the keys are locked. The sat-nav is AWESOME!
-
The Ovi store leaves a lot to be desired, I have an ipod touch and the two are poles apart, the app store is smooth, slick and works all the time. The ovi store looks dated, sticks, doesn't work and is poorly put toghether, not to mention the gap in quality of the majority of apps themselves. Battery life isn't great, but there are a lot of draining features. Not to harp on about apple, but the touch syncronises automatically, and is so simple to use my tech illiterate grandmother could put her favourite chopin tracks on the thing. You need a masters degree in all things complex to get your music onto the device - even with the 'easy install' software.

the software is great, once the firmware updates get rid of the little problems anyway.
looks great, the slide out keyboard is a ncie touch and makes typing in general easier and faster.
-
the handsets are generically faulty, the camera's sliding cover scratches the camera lens with every slide.
after a few days the handsets develop a rattle-ing noise.
a good 20% of the handsets have a bad signal.
and my first handset had battery problems, the phone wouldnt last 6 hours with no use, my replacement however is much better, but i will be getting it exchanged soon because the camera is yet again.. ruined.

Really sexy looking phone, I was so excited about it. The qwerty kepad is great although the space bar is in a weird place. Comes with a stylus for those of you with fat fingers. Vibrate when you hit the touch pad is really cool.
-
Only had it 2 days and a fault kept occuring - I had 8 texts in my inbox but I got an ERROR Memory Full and could only fix it by taking the battery out and putting it back in. Do you really want to do this to a phone that's 2 days old??
There is a slide button at the side of the phone to lock/unlock the keys, 50% of the time you press it to unlock the keys the backlight doesn't come on and you can't see anything so you have to spam the unlock button until the screen lights up.
There were a few other small problems with the phone, such as the apps on the home screen freezing.
Very annoying and the software update only just came out so I suggest you should check to see if all the bugs are fixed in it before you buy this phone. Huge disappointment because it looks so good and has huge potential.

There is virtually no mac support for this product and the operating system is really buggy. Also, because it is sold with a seriously underclocked cpu it can be really laggy when handling processor-intensive tasks.

I would highly recommend this product because of its sleek design, high usability, quick web browsing (tested against the my friend's new iPhone 3Gs) and because it's not an iPhone, it's not cliched and so understated with a strong sense of quality. Its camera is surprisingly good and the ability to upload to facebook almost immediately after the photo is taken is the easiest photographs have had it since the Polaroid camera. Brilliant.

Like with most Nokia's the battery life isn't amazing however acceptable. The speaker is also fairly standard and not up to scratch with Nokia's Xpress Music touch screen phone. Considering the n97 is now Nokia's flagship model, you would think the speaker would be the best available to them.

Being a previous Blackberry user, the main reasons I bought this phone rather than the iphone were the Qwerty keyboard, and because I was told that the Vodaphone network is better than the O2 (i.e. available in more areas). However, the keyboard button are not raised sufficiently (like the blackberry) to make them easy to use, and I do not find them significantly easier than the touch screen. So, the product is bigger and more fiddly than it needs to be. The reception has not been as good as the network that I was on before (T-mobile). In addition, the phone does not interlink with my mac (like other Nokias) so I cannot synchronise music, photos or contacts. Worst of all is the battery. It seems to be fine (several bars showing) and then within no time at all it has run out completely, apparently with no warning (other than a beep just at the moment it runs out). I am very disappointed, as the phone had rave reviews. All in all, I wish I had bought the iphone.

The internet keeps cutting out on the applications if you use the email auto retrieval feature and when it goes back on you keep getting a script error so have to turn the phone off and back on to correct it. So i've just stopped using the auto retrieval feature which i find a pain as it was very handy when it worked.

It looks fantastic, the screen colours are vibrant, it has huge internal memory and it is very easy to use. It has everything you need on one compact phone. I personally believe it is brilliant and stylish. I can't find no major foughts with it. The battery life is good but always could be better, I don't use the kepad keys on the qwerty keyboard as they are quite small so I use the touch screen, but every person is different I suppose. The camera is also decent. It isn't as heavy as you would think it would be either. It is good for someone who basis most of there life on the run socialising with there phone, because it has everything on the phone that you would need to connect to if you were out and about, i.e weather, email, internet etc.
Overall very neat and stylish, brilliantly finished and the software is amazing.

The internet connection is pretty good...hard to get in the obvious places e.g. on a train haha!
No chance of unlocking itself or connecting to the internet itself.
Camera/photo quality is brilliant for a phone!
The phone is a really top quality phone.
Definately recommended.

The lock button sometimes takes 2 pushes to unlock.
If you buy music from the music store its protected so you cant use it as a ring tone.

excellent little phone. I say little, because I cannot fathom how many things were put into such a small package. It's great! The camera is superb, the diary is very simple and easy to use but packed with features, texting is a doddle (although I do keep hitting the "sym" key instead of the space too often for my liking). Surfing the net is good and quick. Emails are easy to download and respond to.
-
Battery life. with most of my features switched off, it tends to last a day and half before on the last two bars and needs recharging. If it could last 3 days or more with things like my "get email " function switched on, then I would be happy.

vastley improved on the n95.easier to use and a more subtle appearance. The wlan scanning is still a function that work's so well in nokia's with the simplest of ease.
-
unfortunatley the battery life is still short but in retrospect with all the phone's function's it is still quite good.

the Qwerty keyboard is very good and easy to use, web browing, email and watching videos are also very good with the big screen.
-
occasionally the screen takes a few seconds to turn once the phone has been turned, texts can take a little wile to send and the on screen widgets sometimes take a wile to load if at all.

Looks great!
Once you're acquainted with the new interface and have personalised your settings navigation is good.
Connects to web fast.
Excellent camera and music player!
Main screen widgets very useful, so you can add links to your most used apps.
-
When you're used to using a normal keypad to text, it really throws you having to use a qwerty keypad, but hopefully this will, in time become easier.
Sometimes the screen doesn't light up when u activate the keypad.
i have only used the phone for around 7 days as was on holiday and didnt take it with me, so given a bit longer i hope to master fast text on qwerty!

I like the whole design of the phone, I like being able to change what apps I display on my screen.
There is a wide range of apps and tools to use on this phone. The sliding keypad is a great facility for those who would find it difficult to text using the touch screen
Camera and video quality is excellent!
-
I sometimes find answering the phone difficult when trying to remove the lock and answer before the phone cuts off.

Touch screen is good, basic design is very good, let down by details but I suspect the firmware updates will get rid of most of those eventually. Music player is good, camera good, had an N95 before and in some ways its harder to do things with the N97, things that really should be easier.
-
Screen lock is clumsy and inconsistent even with latest firmware update. Bluetooth is awkward and I cannot export my contacts to my car kit. Very difficult in some cases to make apps run smoothly, exploring the phone for files is almost impossible.

Lovely looking phone. It will take some excellent pictures but remember it's still a phone! Easy to set up and use once you get used to it; hotmail/facebook work easily, all you do is input email & password. Loads of features. GPS works well.
-
Although battery does well considering the phones features and spec, it does drain very quickly after 36 hours or so. Apps/email aren't as slick as (I hate to mention it) the iPhone. Bottom line: If you like what this phone can do, your better off with an iPhone. However, it is a VERY, VERY good phone.

I was after the most advanced and recent Nokia and that is what I got. It surpasses any Nokia I've had in the past. Any other manufacturors' phones don't quite provide such an easy experience. Anybody can pick up a Nokia and know how to use it within minutes, whereas if you pick up say an Ericsson, it takes days to get your head around. This idea of touch screen just makes the Nokia experience EVEN EASIER. The buttons are big and chunky for people with bigger fingers, yet at the same time not making the display look idiot proof and childish.
-
If I turn the phone on and don't touch it for it's standby time, the battery will last a couple of days, however if I use it as I would any other phone for light texting and calling and use some of the features, the phone can be dead within 12 hours!!

There are so many good points about this phone. You can personalise almost everything with such ease and the touch screen is very responsive. The slide out qwerty keyboard is surprisingy easy to use, however if you're just looking to fire away a quick text then a touch screen keyboard is also available in a simple click. Web browsing is fantastic as is the various applications available from the nokia ovi store.
-
Cant say there are any! Little bit chunky but this is to be expected due to the keyboard and large screen.

The Nokia N97, has a 3.5″ touchscreen, 5MP camera (with Carl Zeiss Tessar lens) and flash, a huge 32GB of storage with an extra 16GB via the Micro SD slot, GPS with built-in compass and WiFi.
And if you get fed up of having to keep charging up your phone, the N97 has 400 hours of standby time! Along with 37 hours of music and 4.5 hours of video playback.
There's also a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, fully customisable home screen, Symbian S60 software, N-Gage games and all the syncing you expect from Nokia.
Look out for the Nokia N97 in March.
