+ if you have had a nokia before then it will be very familiar. Nice to be able to view movie (mp4) and the quality and screen resolution is ok.
webmail is ok.

- The headphones that come with the phone are terrible.
If I set an alarm from Mon-Fri, I cannot just disable the alarm for today but still leave the setting for the rest of the week. I found the whole area to do with alarms really irritating. On most phones you have more control over individual days. Also, it took me a while to find out where exactly to set the alarm.
The screen is terrible after you have touched it a few times. It is a gloss screen rather than matt. I don't get why the phone would have been designed this way especially since an iphone is matt. The difference is that on matt you would not see all the smear marks. Once they are there, it is really hard to get rid of.
The phone has cut out on me on a number of occasions.
When I imported calendar events from google calendar, it brought in the events with alarms on them. There is no easy way to turn of calendar alarms in one go. You are forced to go through each event which is impractical since there are loads of them. I now find that I have alarms going off at strange times in the night which is really annoying.

Web browsing is good, Nokia software is good, very user friendly, and stylus really helps too.

- Downsides are only 3.2 megapixel camera, and Nokia music software/synching with Windows media is rubbish. I'm used ti itunes/ipod so am maybe spoilt but it should be easy. Am using phone more as a USB device because of this which is OK for average IT users but not you're average person...

+ Excelent sound quality and Video capture.
One of the best touch screen for full keyboard layout.

- Too many navigation buttons to achieve some tasks. For example the wireless connection, too many buttons to connect. Although short cuts can be created.
The software is not as fast as other phones using MS Windows Mobile. The web browser speeds are slow compared to Mobile internet explorer or Mobile FireFox.
The default MAPs navigation with GPS is slow. I found it to be faster after installing google maps and navigate.

+ It looks slick and has a good viewing panel for web browsing.

- I find it difficult to navigate the phone menus - it is not intuitive. The motion sensitive monitor (i.e. that changes orientation when you move the phone, like an iPhone), is not very sensitive. It doesn't switch when you want it to, but often switches when you don't want it to, and then won't switch back! It is also not so easy to use the touchscreen for all my texting/typing needs. And the radio does not have as good reception as previous phones of mine.

+ Easy to use. Good phone for the price, considering a touch screen with many similar features would cost 2.5 to 3 times the price!

- Battery poor when applications left open for more than a couple of minutes. I have have had several intermittent problems which need switching the phone off to reset it. An example of this was the alarm, a simple function yet stopped working until I switched it off and then on again next time. This has happened to several of the 'features' and you only get to know about it when it is too late!!!!

Score 9.0/10

+ Great screen size for watching video; good clear picture and decent sound.
Simple design/layout, generally easy to use.
Sound quality for music is good, love the in-phone podcasting function (no downloading to PC and transferring across).
Great range of third-party applications available.
I'll probably end up listing more bad points than good points, but that's not at all indicative of my feelings; I love this phone, it's just far easier to pick faults than to lavish praise.

- Default web-browser's not really up to much; functional but that's about the best you can say. Far better to use Opera Mini instead.
Only four custom shortcuts on the Homescreen feels like a needless limitation; adding an extra row or making the one row scrollable to accommodate a few more would be a nice (optional) feature.
Some menu designs are non-intuitive, although this obviously lessens with continued use.
Not a problem with the phone itself, but the supplied USB cable is outrageously short; there can be no possible justification for a cable which is sub-20cm from end to end (including connectors).

Expert reviews for Nokia 5800 XpressMusic

TechRadar expert review

It's taken a while for Nokia to deliver its first post-iPhone touchscreen handset, but with the release of the 5800 XpressMusic, Nokia is now firmly in the touch control game. The first handset to be built on the latest touch-operated 5th Edition of Nokia's S60 smartphone platform, the 5800 XpressMusic packs some heavyweight feature punch. It may line up as Nokia's flagship music phone, but it has a set of functionality more akin to the Nseries high-end phone roster.Generous packageTouchscreen action is centred on its large 3.2-inch touch display, but under the bonnet the 5800…
