+ light, compact, amazing zoom range 24x, good battery life. tilting rear LCD useful too.

- shutter delay, save speed can be excessive due to size of shot, would recomend smaller frame picture size. the zoom control can be hit and miss.

+ Lots of features - almost too many - very impressive shake proofed hand held telephoto pictures.
Blink warning appreciated since I have experienced this problem with flash assisted shots.
Resolution of 12.1 megapixels allows great editing possibilities for the amateur.
I'm sure will continue to impress in use.

- Not a problem, but in operation clanks a bit like my old 35mm. SLR. Can someone explain?

+ So far so good, although have been unable to really put it through it`s paces as yet! Nice to handle, terrific zoom, fantastic view finder - the pictures on the camera look perfect, although I have yet to print them.

- None - but it took too long to be despatched for an item alleged to be in stock,

+ Easy to use in automatic mode solid compact camera

- Difficulty getting it to focus on the area of the image required - going to try using manual focus. I had a coolpix 8700 which I loved and never failed to to take excellent photos with no manual adjustment so am quite disappointed with my P90 as the imaged are not as reliable.

+ Plenty of features to use. Makes using this DSLR very easy. Panorama feature is very good. All other features very intuitive.

- Build quality doesn't live up to the top of the range products butdoes seems robust though. Screen doesn't reverse to protect the face so invest in a screen protector early on!

+ The camera takes amazing photos, is easy to use and a lot lighter than a DSLR. The only thing I will say is that if you preview a picture on the built in screen the quality isn't as good as the actual picture taken, so don't delete pictures taken until you view them on a computer screen, you'll be surprised at the difference in quality. I would buy another one if I ever needed to.

+ Very easy to use. Long zoom A/F is very quick, Tried the firework show mode and really good, Macro is brill. overall a good camera.

- When you put it on digital zoom you get fringing round the subject and need a tripod or steady hand.
Does not do raw and can't put a filter on ( so I've heard)

Expert reviews for Nikon Coolpix P90

PC Advisor expert review - by Neil Bennett

The 12Mp Nikon Coolpix P90 upps the resolution and focal length of its predecessor, the 10Mp P80. The new model gains some interesting features, but unfortunately the basics let it down.

The NIKKOR 24x zoom lens with 26 mm wide-angle capability lets you capture impressive wide-angle and super-telephoto shots, and you can focus from infinity to as close as 1 cm in Macro mode. Advanced exposure modes offer greater control over your photography and you can enhance the vibrancy of images taken under difficult conditions with the powerful Quick Retouch function. The large 3-inch vari-angle LCD monitor can be tilted through 90 degrees upward and 45 degrees downward to allow for easy viewing from the hip or from above. The COOLPIX P90 – unbeatable compositional freedom.

Key Features

  • Generous 3-inch vari-angle LCD monitor: can be tilted up by as much as 90 degrees, or down by as much as 45 degrees. With anti-reflection coating.
  • NIKKOR wideangle 24x zoom lens with super-telephoto capability, offers outstanding precision and sharp resolution. (35mm 135 film format equivalent: 26 – 624mm.)
  • 4x anti-blur automatically counters blurred images in four different ways. Sensor-shift VR (Vibration Reduction) reduces the effect of camera shake. High ISO (up to 6400*) light sensitivity reduces the risk of blurred images with fast-moving subjects or in low-light. Motion detection compensates for camera and subject movement. Best Shot Selector (BSS) automatically selects the sharpest of up to 10 sequential shots.
  • Exposure Modes (P/S/A/M) for greater creative control. Programmed Auto (P), Shutter-priority Auto (S), Aperture-priority Auto (A) and Manual (M).
  • Smart portrait system: advanced automatic features for perfect portraits. Smile Timer and Blink Warning which alerts you when someone had their eyes closed.
  • Electronic viewfinder helps you frame images accurately throughout the entire zoom range and enables sharp, steady shooting, even in bright sunlight.
  • High-speed continuous shooting with pre-shooting cache: shoot up to 45 continuous shots at 15 fps. Gives you the option to press the shutter halfway and record the moments that take place before you press the shutter fully, so that you never have to worry about being a second too late again.
  • 12.1 megapixel resolution lets you capture outstandingly detailed images, crop creatively and produce stunningly sharp poster-size enlargements.
  • Advanced Face Priority AF with in-camera Red-eye Fix lets you quickly detect and focus accurately on up to 12 faces in the frame, and corrects false eye color due to flash the instant you take the shot.
  • Quick Retouch lets you enhance images taken under poor conditions so they appear sharp and vibrant. The original image stays intact and the camera quickly creates a duplicate image with the best balance of contrast and saturation.
  • D-lighting creates pleasing results by correcting strong shadows to rescue underexposed images, or shots taken with excessive backlight.
