+ As with all things Nikon the build quality is superb, the ease of use even for a Techno-phobe like me is straightforward and the prints are very good with no distortion.

- Maybe the "Instruction Book" good be in simpler language for someone like me, if anything in none Jargon terminology but that really is nit-picking to try and find a "bad" point

+ This is (so far) the best purchase I have made. The lens gives a fantastic zoom and really is an amazing item.
Worth every penny!

- At full zoom, there is a very SLIGHT loss of resolution but still well worth getting!

+ great piece of kit. Even though the F stop isn't as low as a pro lens the blur effect is very effective.

- image stabaliser can get a little annoying for fine detail at full telephoto zoom

+ An excellent lens, especially to complement the standard 18-70mm lens which came with the D80 I purchased. Good all round performance and the Vibration Reduction options work well.

- Quite heavy - but given the capabilities not really an issue.

+ Typical Nikon quality, solid and well built without being too heavy. As a compromise zoom lens, it offers a good balance of focal length, versus size and image quality across the zoom range. The VR system works well, as long as you don't expect it to work miracles - this is a zoom equivalent to 450mm at the long end in 35mm terms, after all. It must be hard to beat this lens at the price - I'd expect to have to pay thousands for anything that would offer significantly better quality.

- As mentioned before, any zoom lens is a compromise, and it isn't particularly fast at f4.5/5.6, but this is equivalent to other lenses in its class. Even with VR, if you plan to use it at its long end, then best carry a decent tripod or monopod as well.

+ First and foremost this has a fantastic 300mm zoom that will accommodate most photographer needs. Its auto-focus is really quick and the Vibration-Reduction really comes in handy. I’ve always felt satisfies with my photos after a good session with this lens. Over all it is a sturdy piece of kit that is built to last.

- The bad points are all inherent with a lens of this function and quality. It is really big and heavy but you soon get used to this when out and about. However, be prepared to allocate it some prime real estate in your camera bag even when not is use! Also, the zoom ring is a little tough and rigid to rotate but as with before you don't notice it with time

+ Its great for taking items far away. I have taken birds flying and have got some great pictures.

- The viewing wheel, is at the base, which I have a problem finding as the original lens with camera has the viewing wheel at the other end. But having said that I would not part with it.

+ Given the necessity for full-frame sensor coverage, the choice was between this lens and a vastly more expensive product. As this is a focal range I only use on rare occasions it was the obvious choice and performs well for my purposes.

- Very compact & light, which might be considered a plus-point, but concerns me over it's robustness.

Paul, Bedford , “An enthusiastic amateur technophile”

+ Excellent autofocus and very good image quality. Image stabilisation seems to work well. Feels solid and precise with smooth zoom and focus movement.

- It's very weighty and large, so it doesn't fit into a standard Nikon camera case when attached to the camera body. The focal distance range of 50-300mm is good for distant objects but it would be much better if it extended to a wider angle, like the 18-200 zoom lens.

Manufacturer's Description

The AF-S VR 70-300 f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is a high-performance super telephoto zoom lens that has been designed to meet the demands of both digital and 35mm format SLR users. It offers a 4.3x zoom with a range of 70-300mm (105-450mm on a DX Nikon D-SLR) and features ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements that ensure superior optical performance. This lens incorporates Nikon’s second-generation vibration reduction system (VR II) that allows flexible hand-held shooting by stabilizing the image to the equivalent extent of using a shutter speed that is four stops faster when compared with a conventional lens (as determined by Nikon performance test). The SWM (Silent Wave Motor) and IF (Internal Focusing) ensure fast and quiet focusing action, and the nine-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend smoothly to produce natural-looking, harmonious backgrounds.

Key Features

  • 4.3x high-power zoom with a range of 70-300mm. Equivalent to 105-450mm when used with a DX format D-SLR camera.
  • SWM (Silent Wave Motor) enables quiet automatic focusing with quick and convenient switching between autofocus and manual operation.
  • IF (Internal Focusing) design for fixed lens length and non-rotating front element allows the use of circular polarizing filters and lens-mounted flash accessories.
  • VR II offers the equivalent stability of a shutter speed that is 4 stops faster (as determined by Nikon performance test). Normal Mode counters hand-held vibration and Active Mode reduces mechanically-induced vibrations.
  • 2 ED glass elements minimize chromatic aberration across the entire zoom range while ensuring high resolution and contrast.
  • Focus options – Automatic with manual override and Manual only.
  • 9-blade rounded diaphragm makes out-of-focus elements blend together smoothly for natural-looking backgrounds.
  • 67mm diameter filter attachment size (non-rotating).
