+ Unbeatable image quality for such a cheap price.
At f8 this lens is as good as any prime lens available at any price - including its more expensive f1.4 big brother.
Don't be put off by its fixed focal length - not too long ago, all the very best photographers used fixed lens and look at the results they got!

- At this price and photo quality, I'm nit-picking, but it's made of some sort of plastic - an exotic and metal-looking plastic, but still plastic.
On a DX format camera you have to lock-down the aperture ring to f22 and use the on-camera controls.

+ Super sharp lense, low weight, fantastic focal length (just about covers any situation). Works very well with the Nikon D80.

- A little noisy auto focusing, and does not come with a lense hood (also, you have to buy a special rubber one as there is no hood thread).

+ The 50mm f1.8 nikon lens produces crystal clear and pin-sharp images. It's an under-used lens nowadays but I would recommend to everyone that they should find room in their photographic armoury for one of these versatile lenses.

- This lens has no bad points.

+ Excellent prime lens, superb quality for a lot less cash than the f1.4 version. Same size filter thread as as the D40's standard 18-55 zoom lens of 52mm. Precision feel

- Does not auto-focus with the D40 (or D40x)

+ Fast AF with minimal hunting on cameras supporting AF. Good low natural light performance when wide open. Sharpest images for any lense at a similar price point. Excellent for taking portraits.

- Build quality a little plasticky, but for the price not unexpected. Somewhat awkward focal length on 1.5x crop DX sensors (focal length equivalent to 75mm on FX sensor), so requires a little more thought to use than a zoom lense. No VR.

+ Super quick neat little lens, works great in low light conditions. Can be used indoors without having to use harsh flash. Nice images. Better build quality than I was expecting.

- At this price - none.
Haven't got to grips with my camera yet (D200) but hope image quality improves with practice.

+ It is by far the sharpest (and cheapest!) lens I own, and the large max aperture means low light focussing is a breeze. It's a perfect portrait lens, giving a lovely out of focus background, yet it's small and unobtrusive on the camera.

- I gave 'ease of use' 7 out of ten, not because it's complicated, but because it's not a zoom! This sounds silly, but as my first prime lens I find it tricky to frame/compose correctly, but the extra effort it makes you put in does mean you get a more considered picture. It's also rather plasticy - the optics/aperture controls etc are fantastic, but the casing feels as though it's quite cheap.

+ Clear images and perfect for great portraits.

- The DoF blurring isn't quite as nicely shaped as on other lenses (I think due to the 7 blade aperture). However this isn't too great a problem.

+ Although this lens is technically plastic, the build quality is actually very good. Doesn't feel cheap at all.
The focus isn't so fast, but this isn't really a problem given the cost of the lens. I just wanted something which was good in low light but also a lens which can give the best image quality without any distortion. The fact that it isn't a zoom doesn't really matter, as I have legs.

- Fairly slow focus... that's it!
