Pretty much everything is great about the G1. I love the ease of use, all the applications available (for free!) and the layout of everything. I like the message layout, although it was different to get used to to begin with. The QWERTY keyboard is great!
-
The battery life is quite bad. It'll last longer if you just use it for calls, but when you're using the net, sms and especially online messenging, it seems to drain fast. The only other down point is that I've noticed it turns itself off when you have too much open sometimes.

I really like the Android operating system and the fact that people are writing open source applications for it. Phone itself is pretty good overall, with good sized full qwerty keyboard and neat trackball. Excellent web browser and good music player. Although it doesn't use std headphones, the supplied one's are OK, so not a big issue for me. Threaded messaging is great, didn't realise this until now as this is first mobile to feature it, much better way to organise texts and emails. The other really good feature is full integration with Google apps, like Mail, Calendar etc. This meant that my email and all contacts were sync'd very easily just by entering my Gmail details. Beats the Microsoft system hands down! (previously mobile was Windows based). Finally, it is very easy to add ringtones, music and pictures in order to customise the phone. Overall, highly recommended.
-
Battery life is not so hot, but having said that, all I do is plug it in when at my desk and there's plenty for normal use. It does go down if you really hammer the web browsing though. Generally nothing bad enough to put me off.

The Android operating system is open source, features such as additional bluetooth, video recording and possible web flash player are being released. Free internet. Downloadable, free applications which make innovative and excellent use of the features of the phone. Copy and paste (unlike the iphone). The G1 also has a removable battery which means you can charge up and take a spare.
-
The miniUSB headphones that come with the phone are terrible, and no 3.5 adaptor is supplied. Device currently (January 2009) dosen't have all features it is capable of (although they are being released), notably it cannot save and run applications from the SD card, meaning there is a limit to the supposedly boundless capactiy for applications of the OS.

The best feature in my oppinion is the market place. It gives the ability to browse and install software/games directly from the phone, no need for a pc based management application like Itunes. The web browser is fantastic for a mobile device.
-
As others have said the battery life is poor. I turn off wifi, bluetooth, gps and 3g (2g is always on so I'm still connected) and then just turn them on as needed - it makes a real big difference but I shouldn't have to do that.

The phone, which takes very good pictures, doesn't have a flash, so i cant take pictures when its dark. If the phone had a flash it would be very good! Also the battery life is terrible... it should have been made to last the duration of a day with the internet being used. One other thing. This phone has bluetooth to connect to a bluetooth headset but not to other bluetooth enabled mobile phones...why?

After having read the reviews from previous purchasers I was beginning to doubt about the G1 - but when I received it and read throught the operating manual etc I have found that all the bad press it has been given is down to people not reading the instructions and following the setup procedures. The phone does all that it says it will and is very easy to customise for personal preferences - if people want a HQ digital camera etc they should buy one and not expect a 3mp camera to give the performance of a HR unit. So my advice to all the people who are not able to read instruction manuals and follow simple set-up proceduresis get a phone that is very basic and leave the G1 to people who are prepared to spend time getting to know it's features. Overall the G1 is a very easy to operate user friendly bit of kit with up to date technology and funtionality.

Only bad point is the battery life - there are better ones available online.

Excellent all round phone, packing everything you need into one tidy unit! Forget the hype and plastic razzmatazz of the iPhone. The G1 runs rings round the iPhone. The sound quality is fantastic - at both ends of the call..... Callers have been assuming I'm calling from a landline. For Internet on the move the G1 is outstanding. Internet, email, excellent add-on (free!!) apps and a great phone at your fingertips. I don't usually enthuse about a lump of plastic, but this one is great!
-
Battery life is really poor. Make a few calls, check email, do a few Google searches and the G1 is running seriously low on juice. I'd advise anyone considering this phone to have a charger at home and one at work (although it will charge very quickly on either charger plugged into the mains or the USB cable connected to your PC)

While it seems at first like a pretty standard "smart" phone, android makes all the difference. The ability to replace the operating system with your own version, add from a wide range of really useful applications (not just calendars and PIM, but ssh clients, wifi scanners, shop savy, and excellent e-mail clients beyond the gmail, AnvNac navigation is promising... and it even runs debian as second operating system!), and write your own applications beats any other phone out there. It has a real keyboard which is worth a lot, excellent screen and all the other features one would expect from such a phone.
-
The camera could be better, but I don't really care as my real camera is a DSLR, not a useless toy as all these phone cameras usually are (and it does the job for barcode scanning). The batter could last longer, but it works for a day for me with reasonable usage. So no real negative points as all these phones are compromises and I rather work on an open platform, instead of protected, nonsense-feature enhanced rubbish. A build-in projector to run pdf presentations from (please no powerpoint!) and/or a link to a full projector are the only things I miss.

Having Android as the OS and access to loads of free opensource apps which make full use of the touch-screen, keyboard and accelerometer. Some of the applications are astounding such as Shazzam which recognises music and tags it or Google Maps with street view not to mention the superb Gmote (google it). The fact that the phone and OS are opensource means virtual futureproofing for a long time to come. Everything just works well and everything is intuitive.
-
The battery life is the only problem I have with this phone but even that can be overcome by setting the screen brightness down, turning off GPS/3G/Wfi. I tend to get around 2 days light usage before a charge and around a day of heavy usage. The phone charges with what is now the industry standard for mobile phones, a mini-usb jack.

The G1 is an excellent first offering as an Android Platform. The synchronisation between my email, my google maps and my calendar is above and beyond what I've had before. The community of developers that underlie the android's success makes this phone far more approachable that the iPhone fashion-clique or the Crackberry ultra-prods.
The phone interface is a joy to use. The hybrid of touch-screen, full QWERTY keyboard and trackerball is the killer design in my opinion. No one single interface ticks all the boxes in my opinion so to have all three of them installed in one device in a tight, succinct fashion is THE way I think mobile interfaces should conform to.
The connectivity similarly is as expansive as any one phone can achieve. The GPS, bluetooth, USB, 3G and 2G connectivity neatly encapsulates all the connection you could possibly need. The downside to having such a heavyweight list of wireless/wired interfaces is that it tires the battery extremely quickly but, thanks to the Android community, for providing "Power Manager" - with this you can toggle which conductivities are on at any given time and this manage the battery life.
Oh, and try the barcode scanner... honestly I have never been so impressed by a phone's capabailities.
-
-Battery life - but then again this is not G1-specific it is smartphone-specific. To its credit you can manage how much power the phone draws very easily.
-No phono input (the input of a set of headphones); A serious flaw, to use headphones on the G1 you MUST use a non-standard USB-C (like) interface and I sincerely believe this is so I have to buy either HTC/T-mobile approved peripherals or get a bluetooth headset. Neither of these is optimal since I am at the whim of creativity and production these two companies, a bluetooth set of headphones eats into the, already, overstretched battery life.

This is the ideal phone for web-browsing and emailing on the go. The full QWERTY keyboard makes writing longer emails and text messages a breeze. As with all new smartphones the battery life can be a little limited, when used sensibly though (e.g. wifi and gps turned off when not in use, can be turned back on in seconds) I generally need to recharge it once every two days.

Using the internet is very easy too. Its actually faster than my pc which is a bit old, so I'm on the internet using my phone more than the pc now!

The only 2 bad points about this phone are the battery life and camera.
The battery lasts long enough if you don't use it much but for a phone designed around the internet, its a bit low on battery life.
The camera is pretty good unless its dark. There is no flash and even if the area is just getting dark, the picture is very hard to see. Its fine during the day though or with a light on, but I can't take pictures when I'm out at a club with mates.

I have been a fan of HTC for several years. This particular HTC phone loaded with the Google Android software has surpassed anything I had experienced with other phones. I am able to organise myself with ease, just a stroke of my finger or a stroke of the trackball. The bonus is T-Mobile provided a free 8GB SD card, so downloading music and applications is great. In addition the availibility of many Android applications makes the user experience effortless!
-
I am very disappointed with the battery life and the weight of the phone. I would have hoped that the 21st century and all its potential could have provided better use of materials to reduce the weight and increase the battery. The battery seems to last approximately 24-30 hours on a good day and much less with active use.

QWERTY keyboard makes life SO much easier when texting - I'll never go back to a phone with a standard number-pad. Web-browsing is great too, as is e-mail on my phone. They are both the sort of things that you don't think will be that good - until you get them! Now I wouldn't be without the web and access to my e-mails on the move.
-
The battery life is *a lot* less than my old phone (there's a price to pay for all these extra features, I suppose). Having said that, it easily lasts the day, but I'm not sure it would last two, so you *have* to make sure you charge it every night.
The camera is a little bit of a disappointment as well. I've come from a phone with a 2 mega-pixel camera, with flash and zoom, to a 3.2 mega-pixel with no flash or zoom. Frankly, the flash and zoom made the old one better. Sorry, but it's true.
Also, the software could do with some work. My biggest gripe is that you are currently (as far as I can work out) unable to choose a tone of your own for text messages. Thus, I've had a particular tone that I've used for the last several years and now I can't use it because the G1 can't do it. It's a silly oversight that I'm sure will get fixed by a software update soon. But until then, it's annoying.

The G1 soon becomes more than a mobile phone. It becomes a personal assistant, offering you help in a remarkable number of situations. "Where am I?", "How do I get to..?", "What are my friends up to?", "What's going on in the world?", "What's does this mean...?"
On top of that, if you can't get entertainment out of the G1 within a few finger swipes, you're really not trying. The music and games and video are a given. Seamless integration with Youtube is super-neat. I love the applications that grab your podcasts for you in the background and serve them up, all in order. I love the way it will update my Twitter, and let my closest friends and family know where I am via a map on my Facebook page. I love the way it automatically turns off my ringtone when I get in the vicinity of my workplace, and switches over to wi-fi when I get home.
The G1 is a great companion to have around.
-
The battery. Ugh. All that stuff has to come at a price, and you can't run GPS, browse the web and perform all that... magic... without it eating away at your power reserves. If you don't go silly, you can run for a full day without a charge. If you're going to leave the GPS on, you'll be topping up by lunchtime. It charges up again quickly, though.

the google android GUI is a serious challenger to apple/windows/symbian os. There is scope for the marketplace to develop as the gps-related apps have the potential to be a marketleader.
-
the handsfree kit is just awful with a lack of descent sound, and it is difficult to put a better kit in its place due to the deliberate design of the phones jack. the style of the handset is cheap and bulky and looks more like a prototype rather than a consumer product. the transfer of music files and video files is awkward and a real pain far outweighing the benefits of it. The interchangeable memory is clumsy and at 2gig for a multimedia handset is far too small. the battery life is not too good either. the slide-out qwerty keyboard is unneccessary and adds to much bulk with the touchscreen interface ok, but has the potential to be developed. a better handset is required to utilise the android GUI to help it become a sucess.

battery life could be better but i guess with so much technology at your fingertips it's to be expected, also the lack of flash limits some of the internet. also the inability to run applications from your SD card means you run out of space quickly, and have to select the apps you most use and delete the rest. picture messaging and video capture should come as standard on such a high tech phone also but i still rate this over my old N95

Battery life can be quite short when using some applications.Sometimes find touch screen too sensitive and navigates away too easily without wanting it to.Still a good phone though, just need to get used to its ways.

Battery life - but you can change it for a bigger one (2400 mAh) and then this phone is ready for journey with GPS turned on all the time. Oh and camera isn't great, but it's enough to take some pictures.

Im never bored when waiting as there are so many things on the phone that I can play.
I don't even get lost as I can find my Location with the GPS.

The Battery life isn't that bad when you consider the amount of time spent using the phone for things other than texting and calls. It will last a day or two with heavy usuage, I charge mine every night. If you get into that habit you won't have a problem.

Love the Android platform - very easy to use with good applications and the promise of even better ones to come. The user interface is slick and stylish, everything works and it has taken much less time to learn this 'phone's functionality than any other handset I've owned - the whole thing is very intuitive and I've only had to refer to the manual a couple of times. Very impressed.
-
Battery life could be better, but it's a fair swap - I'm happy to put up with the short battery life in exchange for the overall excellence of this handset.

Very easy to use, lots of greate application and games I can download for free from the "Market", G1 is really good for web browsing and email. I think the keyboard is very comfortable in use. Landskape wallpapers are lovely, that is something else - it just like G1 has 3 screens. Interface (software) works beautifuly, without any problems at all!!
-
Camera isn't too good and organiser (calendar) doesn's work as simple as I thought. Music - sound quality could be better and there is no synchronisation with others mobile phones - bluethoot doesn't work like that. Battery life very short but it charges very quickly.

T-Mobile G1 / HTC Dream
Very responsive, lots of applications and new ones are easy to install from the marketplace.
Good design, 'navigation nipple' is backberry style and is very easy to use, also it can be 'pressed' to select something. It isnt bogged down with loads of T-mobile applications like other HTCs sold under the MDA brand (WM6 devices)
Overall very happy with device
-
Battery life - needs to be charged everyday. however the upcoming update Cupcake is amongst other things supposed to increase battery life
No Video recording - as above the next update is supposed to introduce this
No on screen keyboard - for quick messages this would be good, again as above an update will have this in soon
Exchange server sync - after switching from a WM6 HTC I do miss this, but i guess the iPhone didnt have it at release so we'll just wait and see!

-
I guess this depends on usage but battery life drops considerably (as you would expect) once you play a few games or use the GPS etc. At least with the G1 the battery is replaceable so it wont be long before longer lasting batteries are available.

At first glance the G1 would seem to be a contender to the iPhone's dominance, but after using it for 2 weeks it totally surpasses Apple's handset. For those willing to put in a little extra effort getting to know the Android OS, the G1 is unbeatable for functionality. With a full QWERTY keyboard, trackball, large touchscreen and GPS, there is very little that the G1 doesn't do better than the iPhone and the push email for googlemail accounts might turn the heads of a few blackberry users.
-
The lack of a pdf viewer is a major oversight and even with the power manager app installed (an essential download) battery life is very short. There is no 3.5mm jack socket, which means you are tied to using the provided headphones, which are terrible. The option of an on-screen keyboard for text messaging would be handy, but now I'm just being picky. Oh, and if anyone can get a picture out of the camera that isn't blurred, please tell me how.

This product is good for picking up your messages wherever you are but you have to make sure you sign out properly. The keyboard is easy to use and operation of phone is easy once you have used it a few times. One main problem I find with this product is the ringtone volume, it doesn't appear to be loud enough, even when set on highest capacity, when walking in the street and vibration is not enough to feel it.

The phone is obviously heavier and bigger than a 2G phone with no keyboard or touch screen, but not to its disadvantage, and is really well designed, comfortable, and easy to use. It's very fast to respond, and context menu very organised; I even find the keyboard easy but then do have small fingers. Quality of all aspects excellent, maps particularly impressive, and the syncing with gmail so useful I'm already hooked. Would recommend it to anybody, but I've only had it a week...
-
I've put battery life as bad, as I don't think it lasts three days without needing charging. However, given the functionality and use it goes through (especially as it's new and I'm playing a lot!), I don't think this is too bad, and it certainly charges very quickly. There doesn't seem to be predictive text which a friend asked me about; I'm not sure I'd want it with a keyboard, but if you're used to it and not a fan of typing, this might slow you down. When you're on the phone and are asked to 'press 1 for option x', you need to open the keyboard to press 1, but maybe I've just not discovered the shortcut for getting the touchscreen numbers back whilst on a call.

The navigation is dreadful for me, you do not get the touchscreen feature to function very easily and sometimes not at all then you have to go to the'track ball' that device is very slippery and is easy to move but not easy to 'pin down' to make it work. Maybe I am clumpsy and have a disabledhand but this navigation system, in my opinion could be improved to be more 'accesible for old people with disabilities like me and a love for the latest technology.

A great phone in its own right, although undoubtedly a phone in development. The design is a bit aging, but expect to be impressed by the user interface. The large screen and very user friendly touch screen are definite bonuses, where as the lack of a video recorder and 3.5mm jack are disappointing. The make and end call buttons near the bottom of the handset overcome the common over-sensitivity problems of touchscreens during calls. A worthy rival to the iPhone.
