The sound is very clear and detailed. It is a little thin on normal settings, but when the treble and bass are boosted the result is excellent. The chunky little loudspeakers perform very well for a mini/micro system. I have connected an IPOD dock: this sits neatly on a corner of the tuner/amplifier without obstructing the ventilation slots. The Denon is replacing a system which I had for many years and which, allowing for inflation, cost three times as much. The Denon's performance is not inferior to the its predecessor.
-
The electronic command systems are slightly temperamental. For example, when I turned up the volume on the tuner/amplifier at the same time as a disc was loading into the CD player, the player stopped reading discs. It only recovered after I had disconnected it from the mains. Also the CD player doesn't always obey a "Play" command from the handset, and so you have to press the "Play" button on the player itself. It reminds me of the sort of idiosyncracies you get with a Sky TV Box.

This is a great product with fantastic sound quality. You can alter the bass and treble on this which you cannot do anymore on a huge range of stereos causing us to reject them all. For the money this is extremely good value indeed.

a well engineered product with excellent sound quality for its size. when you feel the weight of the speakers you just know that you will have good sound even before you connect them up!!! may seem expensive when compared to other systems but you only get what you pay for and this isn't b*sh!!!! need i say more

Remote control is a 'bit busy' and not easy to get used to.
iPod socket should be on the back so as to present a clean view of the front panel.

Build quality seems very good and its a really nice looking neat unit.

If I had to be critical then I would say it sounds just a little restrained. I paired it up with Monitor Audio bronze bookshelf speakers connected up with Airloc terminated Qed Silver anniversary speaker cable but, and I may be harsh but compared to the separates (it was bought to replace it just doesn't seem to quite arrive. I kind of expected that though and if Mini systems are what you are used to its probably fantastic

Cable connections all in view unless the unit is put in some kind of cabinet, but this is partly due to its compact size, which I like.

Also known as: DENON DF102DABS, DENON DF102DAB, Denon, Denon D-F102DAB
HiFi Buyers' Guide
Manufacturer's Description
A brand new design built using audiophile components, with technologies derived from Denon’s Advanced Evolution Hi-fi Series, DAB, total iPod integration, a phono input and even an optional cassette deck.
The D-F102DAB replaces the D-F101 and does so with great panache. Each D-F102 starts life as two mini hi-fi separates, a CD Player and a Compact DAB/RDS Receiver, both packed with Denon’s latest audio technology and importanntly for 2007, Denon’s ECO Stand-by power circuit, using less than 0.1 w in standby.
When these are connected together, an array of remote & intelligent features come into operation, turning the components into a smart, easy-to-operate mini Hi-fi. The key to this product is that Denon care about music as well as looks, the electronics are way above average and the speakers are designed in Europe and voiced for UK tastes.
The D-F102 will fill all but the largest room with a quality and richness of sound that is very rare in systems of this class and unusually, the 102 has inputs for a phono turntable and an optional cassette deck.
Each miniature component is based on Denon’s Advanced Evolution hi-fi. The 102CD is an advanced 192kHz/24bit player, the 102DAB receiver uses audiophile design & components and a fully specified DAB/RDS tuner. Partnered with the new Denon Euro speakers, the sound quality is superb for a system of this size & price. As usual Denon don’t force customers to buy things they don’t need. The speakers and cassette are options.
